About The Position

The primary purpose of this role is to coordinate and supervise the nursing care of all residents, ensuring the therapeutic regimen is implemented and documented according to federal, state, and local regulations to improve the quality of care and life for residents. As the Assistant Director of Nursing, you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out assigned duties. In the absence of the Director of Nursing Service, you are charged with carrying out the resident care policies established by the facility.

Requirements

  • Nursing Degree from an accredited nursing school, college or university.
  • Current State of Florida nursing license.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a supervisor in a hospital, long-term care facility, or other related health care facility.
  • Minimum of six (6) months training experience in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
  • Current, unencumbered, active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in this state (or an unencumbered, current, active Licensed Practical Nurse License from this state may be considered in buildings with 120 or less beds).
  • Must possess and maintain an “Eligible” ACHA Background Screening status.
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to Long Term Care Facilities.
  • Knowledge of ADA and OSHA laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and HITECH Laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act and other laws, rules and regulations governing nursing practice.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
  • Knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.
  • Leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures necessary for providing quality care.
  • Patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.
  • Willingness to seek out new methods and principles and incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day.

  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that enable these senses to function adequately.

  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility, which include a medical and physical examination.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 35 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 450 feet.
  • May be required to lift, or assist with lifting of, residents.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Nursing in implementing, developing, organizing, evaluating, and directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing service department.
  • Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures for the nursing department.
  • Ensure that reference materials at the nurses' station are current.
  • Recommend written material to assist the nursing department in meeting resident needs.
  • Ensure the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is current and reflects day-to-day nursing care procedures.
  • Develop and periodically update nursing objectives and statements of philosophy.
  • Assist in developing and implementing a nursing service organization structure.
  • Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the Director concerning the operation of the nursing department.
  • Periodically review department policies, procedure manuals, and job descriptions, making recommendations for revisions.
  • Ensure Policy and Procedure manuals are reviewed annually by the QA Committee and acknowledgements are maintained.
  • Ensure signature pages are signed by the Medical Director, Administrator, DON, and Risk Manager and replaced in all Policy and Procedure binders.
  • Maintain a folder with all previous acknowledgements.
  • Ensure all policy and procedure manuals are updated when new policies are developed and implemented.
  • Review manuals at least quarterly for completeness.
  • Ensure binders are maintained in appropriate offices and on each unit.
  • Assist in developing methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services.
  • Ensure all nursing personnel follow their respective job descriptions.
  • Participate in the development, maintenance, and updating of written job descriptions for each level of nursing personnel.
  • Participate in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the facility's quality assurance program for the nursing department.
  • Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies.
  • Maintain and update QIS Survey Staff Interview Log and distribute to unit managers weekly during the survey window.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and updating of the resident's written discharge plan.
  • Assist the resident in planning the nursing portion of the resident's discharge plan.
  • Enter and/or verify new employees in the EMR system, ensuring titles are completed and units are assigned to CNAs.
  • Remove employees no longer employed from the EMR system.
  • Reset passwords for employees who lock themselves out of the EMR system.
  • Provide in-service training to new nurses on EMR system usage.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, and charting.
  • Maintain weekly inventory checks of the EDK, investigate discrepancies, and document findings.
  • Run weekly activity reports and complete associated tasks.
  • Serve on, participate in, and attend various committees of the facility (e.g., Infection Control, Safety Quality Assurance & Assessment).
  • Serve on the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee and the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement committee.
  • Serve on the Compliance and Ethics Committee.
  • Assist the Director in preparing written and/or oral reports of nursing programs and activities for committees.
  • Participate in the development, maintenance, implementation, and updating of policies and procedures for medication and supply administration, storage, and control.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled reviews of discharge plans and make them available to the Care Plan team.
  • Evaluate and implement recommendations from established committees as they pertain to nursing services.
  • Assist the Director in determining staffing needs of the nursing department.
  • Recommend the number and level of nursing personnel to be employed.
  • Assist the Director in the recruitment and selection of nursing service personnel.
  • Maintain and update the Nurse Manager On-Call schedule.
  • Ensure sufficient licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants are available for each shift to meet resident needs and staffing regulations.
  • Ensure all nursing assistants are enrolled in or have graduated from an approved training program.
  • Ensure nurse aide trainees are under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses and Nurse Supervisors.
  • Assist the Director in preparing and conducting performance and competency evaluations.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of performance evaluations for the nursing department.
  • Make daily rounds to ensure nursing personnel are performing assignments correctly and report findings to the Director.
  • Monitor absenteeism to ensure adequate staffing and report problem areas to the Director.
  • Monitor professional nurses' licensing status to ensure they remain current.
  • Review complaints and grievances filed by department personnel and make appropriate reports to the Director.
  • Ensure departmental disciplinary action is administered fairly.
  • Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
  • Ensure all nursing personnel participate in the facility's TB testing program.
  • Report occupational exposures according to facility policies.
  • Conduct new employee, random, directed, and Work Place Incident Drug Screen Testing.
  • Order supplies from the Lab and call in specimen collections for pickup.
  • Review all drug screen test results and advise HR of any positive findings.
  • Maintain files with Drug Screen Results.
  • Implement the Employee Flu Vaccine Administration program, obtain signature forms, and post administration dates and costs.
  • Complete new and annual employee PPD administration, ensure availability of solution, and maintain files with PPD documentation.
  • Participate in interviewing and selecting residents for admission, including PASRR screenings.
  • Provide the Director with information regarding resident nursing needs and the department's ability to meet them.
  • Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions, expected arrival times, and room assignments.
  • Ensure rooms are ready for new admissions.
  • Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
  • Make rounds with physicians as necessary and inform the Director of any delays.
  • Encourage physicians to record and sign progress notes and orders in the EMR system timely.
  • Ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel.
  • Review nurses' notes for informativeness, descriptiveness of care, resident response, and adherence to resident wishes.
  • Schedule daily rounds to observe residents and ensure nursing needs are met.
  • Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules.
  • Report medication errors to the Director.
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Report problem areas to the Director and assist in developing corrective action.
  • Authorize the use of restraints when necessary and in accordance with policies.
  • Ensure residents unable to call for help are checked frequently.
  • Assist the Pharmacy Consultant by providing reports and lists as needed.
  • Assist the Safety Officer in developing safety standards for the nursing department.
  • Identify, evaluate, and classify job functions with potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Ensure personnel performing tasks with potential exposure participate in in-service training.
  • Ensure adequate supply of personal protective equipment is available.
  • Monitor nursing service personnel adherence to safety regulations.
  • Ensure nursing service work areas are clean and sanitary.
  • Ensure all resident rooms, treatment areas, etc., are clean, safe, and sanitary.
  • Ensure nursing service personnel follow departmental policies, including dress codes.
  • Ensure nursing service personnel participate in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills.
  • Assist the Infection Control Committee in developing and revising aseptic and isolation techniques.
  • Participate in the infection control program for monitoring communicable diseases.
  • Ensure nursing service personnel follow established infection control procedures.
  • Participate in developing and maintaining procedures for reporting hazardous conditions or equipment.
  • Ensure personnel use safety equipment and supplies when moving or lifting residents.
  • Report missing/illegible labels and MSDSs to the safety officer.
  • Recommend equipment and supply needs for the department to the Director.
  • Ensure adequate stock levels of medications, medical supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist the Maintenance Director in developing a preventive maintenance program for nursing department equipment.
  • Participate in developing and implementing procedures for the safe operation of all nursing service equipment.
  • Ensure only trained and authorized personnel operate department equipment.
  • Ensure nursing service equipment is operated in a safe manner.
  • Monitor nursing procedures to ensure efficient use of supplies and avoid waste.
  • Ensure appropriate MSDSs are on file for hazardous chemicals.
  • Encourage resident and family participation in care plan development and review.
  • Ensure all personnel involved in resident care are aware of the resident's care plan.
  • Ensure nursing personnel refer to the care plan before administering daily care.
  • Review nurses' notes to determine if the care plan is being followed.
  • Review and revise care plans and assessments at least quarterly.
  • Develop and maintain rapport with all services involved in the care plan to ensure team effort.
  • Ensure staff members provide care reflecting resident wishes.
  • Participate in the preparation and planning of the nursing department's budget.
  • Keep abreast of economic conditions and recommend adjustments to nursing services.
  • Recommend equipment needs of the nursing department to the Director.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all resident information.
  • Monitor nursing care to ensure residents are treated fairly, with kindness, dignity, and respect.
  • Ensure all nursing care is provided in privacy and personnel knock before entering resident rooms.
  • Ensure nursing service personnel are knowledgeable of resident responsibilities and rights.
  • Review resident complaints and grievances, making reports to the Director indicating actions taken.
  • Maintain a written record of resident complaints/grievances, including actions taken and current status.
  • Ensure residents receive appropriate notices before room or roommate changes.
  • Report and investigate all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property.
  • Ensure nursing staff honor resident refusal of treatment requests in accordance with advance directive policies.
  • Review facility's advance directive policies and procedures with residents and/or family members as necessary.
