About The Position

The Assistant Director of Laboratory Operations is a leadership role responsible for supporting and directing all aspects of clinical laboratory operations, quality, regulatory compliance, strategic growth, and personnel management. This position serves as a key operational partner to the Director of the Laboratory and is designed as a succession-planning role for future laboratory leadership. Working closely with the Director of the Laboratory of Operations, Medical Leadership, and department managers, the Assistant Director will help drive operational excellence, support strategic initiatives, enhance organizational culture, and ensure the delivery of high-quality laboratory services in compliance with all applicable regulatory standards. The ideal candidate is a collaborative and forward-thinking laboratory leader with strong operational, financial, regulatory, and people management expertise who can effectively lead through change while fostering a culture of accountability, quality, and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will have deep experience in Core Laboratory Operations (Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, and Urinalysis) in a high-throughput environment. Independent commercial laboratory experience is preferred, however equivalent experience in a large hospital-based laboratory will be considered. Sunrise operates an automated track and storage system in the core laboratory; experience in that environment is a plus.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, Biological, Medical Technology, or Physical Science required.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of laboratory training and/or experience in a laboratory performing high-complexity testing.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive laboratory management experience required.
  • NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License
  • ASCP Certification

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in clinical laboratory science, Business Administration, or related healthcare field preferred.
  • Independent commercial laboratory experience is preferred, however equivalent experience in a large hospital-based laboratory will be considered.
  • Experience in an automated track and storage system in the core laboratory is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Implements Company goals, supporting change initiatives, and ensuring the efficient, compliant and quality operation of the laboratory; particular focus on personnel development and long-term leadership planning.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards, and the Laboratory Quality Assurance program; makes adjustments to operations as appropriate; uses governing philosophy of quality and continuous improvement.
  • Assists in budgeting, financial, and operational metric reporting to ensure effective oversight of laboratory performance.
  • Performs all aspects of laboratory team development including hiring, mentoring, developing, and counseling, to foster a collaborative, professional team environment.
  • Maintains personal interaction with clients, Company leadership, and non-laboratory departments to ensure the laboratory is fully integrated with, and collaborative with all stakeholders.
