About The Position

The Assistant Director of Garfield Unity Pantry is responsible for the oversight and implementation of all aspects of pantry operations and service delivery, ensuring efficient, equitable and neighbor-centered access to nutritious food and supportive services for individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. This role leads and manages day-to-day operations in the community pantry, including food procurement, volunteer oversight, educational workshops and income support services to pantry clients, and adherence to healthy pantry and trauma-informed care practices. As part of the Unity Health Partnership, this role will also ensure coordination of additional services offered by other community organizations on the campus to neighbors in need. The Assistant Director will be the primary team member representing CFBNJ/the Garfield Unity Pantry in local conversations related to food insecurity. This role also leads the advancement of CFBNJ’s “Innovation Labs” strategy by piloting innovative approaches, modeling best practices, and helping to strengthen CFBNJ’s network of partners in adopting these strategies, while fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment that reflects the organization’s mission, values and commitment to community impact.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of experience in leading a community outreach team where event management and/or project management was required.
  • 3 years of supervisory experience required.
  • A minimum of conversational Spanish is required, fluency preferred.
  • Must be willing and able to drive a box truck.
  • Must be willing and able to carry bulk materials consistently, up to about 50 lbs.
  • Retail/pantry management and administrative background required.
  • Travel is required, reliable transportation from multiple sites.
  • Compassion to work with all levels of the organization, and individuals with diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word Suite, especially Excel.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team

Nice To Haves

  • Other multilingual language skills including Eastern European languages, Creole, Bengali, or others are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Manage daily pantry operations, including food sourcing, donations, inventory, storage, distribution, and client records.
  • Ensure pantry services reflect healthy food access, client choice, and trauma-informed best practices.
  • Oversee facility operations, equipment maintenance, truck operations, regulatory compliance, and site management.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and support volunteers while maintaining volunteer policies and procedures.
  • Lead community outreach efforts to engage clients, volunteers, service providers, and community partners.
  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including Unity Health campus partners, donors, and community organizations.
  • Represent Garfield Unity Pantry and CFBNJ through donor tours, partner engagement, and public-facing activities.
  • Provide technical assistance to partner organizations implementing Growing Healthy Pantries Toolkit strategies.
  • Promote a collaborative, inclusive, and mission-driven culture through positive communication and leadership.
