Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • Three (3) years of full time experience in the organization and administration of fitness programming and group exercise instruction.
  • Experience in teaching, training and/or supervising group fitness.
  • At least one current fitness certification to teach fitness classes that is Nationally Accredited (NCCA) for group fitness instruction.
  • Current experience teaching a variety of fitness related classes.
  • Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License.
  • Must have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in recreation, sports management, physical education, exercise physiology, health and wellness, higher education, student personnel or related field.
  • Additional years (4+) of full time experience in the organization and administration of fitness programming and group exercise instruction.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Experience in facility management.
  • Experience with Human Resource policies and procedures for hiring new staff.
  • Experience creating and utilizing marketing techniques to promote programs (i.e. web page development and design, fliers/brochures, press releases, etc).

Responsibilities

  • Leading and directing a comprehensive Fitness and Wellness Program including planning, scheduling, and evaluating group exercise classes and educational and motivational wellness activities.
  • Recruiting, training, and scheduling all group exercise instructors and student employees associated with the program.
  • Managing software systems for program registration, scheduling, and participant data.
  • Developing and managing a budget.
  • Preparing annual reports for fitness and wellness programs.
  • Overseeing the maintenance and care of the fitness and exercise equipment in conjunction with the Associate Director for Facilities Operations.
  • Maintaining inventory of group fitness class equipment and supplies and assisting in making decisions regarding the acquisition of new equipment and supplies to support programs.
  • Supervising Graduate Students, Group Exercise Instructors, and Fitness Program Coordinators.
  • Assisting with facility supervision.
  • Assisting with campus wide publicity for the Fitness and Wellness program including managing websites, calendars, fliers, and social media.
  • Participating in opportunities that promote learning, growth, and development (i.e., classes, training, committees, webinars).
  • Contributing to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas within and outside your department/unit.
  • Performing other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
  • Assisting with facility supervision and operation of the Campus Recreation Center.
  • Collaborating with other team members within Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services to collectively contribute to the overall functioning and effectiveness of the services provided.
  • Actively participating in team meetings, sharing insights, and engaging in collaborative decision-making processes.
  • Fostering a cooperative and supportive atmosphere, ensuring seamless teamwork, and collectively working towards the common goals and objectives of Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services.
