About The Position

The Assistant Director of Finance position is designed to work closely with, and be mentored by, the organization’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in preparation for eventual succession to the CFO role. This position supports the strategic and day to day financial management of the organization, including accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, audit coordination, and compliance. The Assistant Director of Finance will work directly with the CFO on Board of Directors and Finance Committee matters, developing the governance, communication, and leadership competencies required of a Chief Financial Officer. This is a developmental role, this person should expect to assume greater financial leadership responsibility over time and be prepared to transition to the CFO position upon the current CFO’s planned retirement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, or a closely related field required, Master’s degree (e.g., MBA, MSA) a plus.
  • CPA license strongly preferred, candidates actively working toward CPA license will be considered.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in accounting or finance, including 5 years in a supervisory role.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred, including familiarity with fund accounting, restricted/unrestricted net assets, and grant compliance.
  • Experience supporting or presenting to a Board of Directors, Finance Committee, or Audit Committee strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting requirements applicable to tax-exempt organizations.
  • Proficiency with accounting/ERP software and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to translate financial information for non-financial audiences.
  • High level of integrity, discretion, and sound judgment in handling confidential financial and organizational information.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and professional readiness or potential to assume Chief Financial Officer responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with and be mentored directly by the CFO across all areas of financial leadership, with the intent of assuming the CFO role upon the incumbent CFO’s retirement.
  • Assist in the preparation, analysis, and presentation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable nonprofit accounting standards (e.g., FASB ASU 2016-14).
  • Support the annual budgeting process and ongoing forecasting, working with department leaders to develop and monitor budgets.
  • Oversee or support core accounting operations, including general ledger management, accounts payable/receivable, payroll coordination, cash management, and reconciliations.
  • Maintain and strengthen the organization’s system of internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.
  • Assist in coordinating the annual independent audit and Form 990 preparation, serving as a key liaison with external auditors and tax preparers.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, State of Delaware, and local regulatory requirements, funder/grant requirements, and applicable nonprofit financial reporting standards.
  • Attend and actively participate in Board of Directors meetings and Finance Committee meetings, including preparing financial reports, dashboards, and presentation materials.
  • Assist the CFO in developing materials and analysis for the Board regarding organizational financial, investment performance, reserves, and risk management.
  • Support cash flow management, investment monitoring, and debt or endowment administration, as applicable.
  • Assist with grant and contract financial management, including budgeting, reporting, and compliance monitoring for restricted funds.
  • Contribute to the development and documentation of finance policies, procedures, and internal control frameworks.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor finance/accounting staff as assigned; support performance management and professional development within the department.
  • Represent the finance function on cross-departmental committees and initiatives as delegated by the CFO.
  • Pursue continuing professional education and progress toward (or maintain) CPA licensure.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the finance department and the organization’s mission.
