About The Position

The Assistant Director of Engineering plays a crucial role in overseeing the entire Engineering and Maintenance operation for a large hotel and its associated Co-Ops. This position requires a strategic thinker with strong leadership capabilities to direct, lead, train, and support all Engineering Department Associates. The role involves hands-on involvement in mechanical and technical functions, managing extensive renovations, maintaining vendor relationships, budgeting, and project management within a fast-paced luxury hotel environment.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3-4 years of experience as an Assistant Director of Engineering in a large hotel environment, preferably luxury properties.
  • New York City experience is required.
  • Ability to demonstrate strategic thinking and planning in overseeing the entire Engineering and Maintenance operation.
  • Ability to direct, lead, train, and support all Engineering Department Associates.
  • Prior experience handling extensive renovations.
  • Prior experience maintaining business contacts with all vendors.
  • Prior experience with budgeting.
  • Prior experience preparing Purchase Orders.
  • Demonstrating technical and mechanical oversight of large plants/properties.
  • Prior experience obtaining multiple quotations.
  • Prior experience with project management.
  • Exceptional organizational, administrative, and time management skills.
  • Ability to calculate and work with numbers.
  • Sprinkler license required.
  • Gravity Tank license required.
  • New York City Fire Safety Director license required.
  • Standpipe license required.
  • Hands-on knowledge of all mechanical/technical functions.
  • Strong computer literacy, especially with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Ability to prepare and make presentations to diverse audiences, including Corporate Office.
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of working in a diverse and fast-paced luxury hotel environment.
  • Ability to team build in such a work environment.
  • Exceptional, clear communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Ability to provide all services needed and mandated by the Co-Ops, Internal and External Guests.
  • Ability to directly liaise with the Co-Ops and their representatives.
  • Ability to bend, reach, crouch.
  • Ability to lift items up to 70 pounds.
  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to work and maneuver in close quarters.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in hiring, training, supervising, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and directing all aspects of the Operations’ Associates within the Department.
  • Support and direct all subordinates within the Engineering Department.
  • Handle, direct, and participate in any Hotel emergency.
  • Ensure that employee performance management processes are carefully prepared and delivered.
  • Plan and execute effective preventive maintenance schedules for the Hotel.
  • Plan and implement procedures, systems, and controls to ensure efficient maintenance procedures are carried out.
  • Directly supervise staff in carrying out work schedules and spot-check to verify quality and employee performance.
  • Maintain proper inventories required for the building and Associates.
  • Maintain par stocks and the distribution of items.
  • Ensure timely and accurate sub meter, chemical treatment, and engine room logs.
  • Handle the purchasing of equipment replacement parts and repairs, including contacting vendors for best prices, writing purchase orders, receiving goods, and completing projects.
  • Ensure that the work order/request system is properly executed and that items from the logbook are followed up on.
  • Assist in developing and updating comprehensive departmental policies and manuals.
  • Ensure that all meter readings on heat, light, and power are taken daily and reviewed for consumption.
  • Assist in compiling a monthly consumption report on heat, light, and power, including electricity, gas, steam, and water.
  • Set up fire line safety systems, valve locations, and other emergency procedures involving the department.
  • Ensure effective communication and good relations between the maintenance department and other hotel departments.
  • Prepare and follow through on any projects as outlined by senior management.
  • Ensure all areas of the hotel are patrolled and inspected on a regular basis.
  • Ensure all maintenance staff are in uniform and well-groomed.
  • Ensure timely completion of all assigned responsibilities.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining an energy conservation program to meet annual budget targets.
  • Prepare/review requisitions for purchase and work orders and liaise efficiently with the Director of Engineering.
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner that reflects the high standards of the hotel and encourage staff to do the same.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with other employees, providing instruction and encouragement as needed.
  • Ensure a clean, neat, and organized work area.
  • Attend and participate in all required meetings.
  • Respond properly in any hotel emergency or safety situation.
  • Perform other tasks or projects assigned by hotel management and staff.
