About The Position

The Assistant Director of Communications serves as a strategic communications leader responsible for developing, shaping, and executing the university's external and internal messaging. This role exercises independent judgment and discretion in crafting original content, managing media relations, and establishing editorial direction aligned with institutional priorities. The position requires invention, imagination, and originality in a recognized field of creative endeavor and operates with autonomy under general direction.

Requirements

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and organizational skills.
  • Proven excellence in writing and editing skills.
  • Expert skills for layout and design techniques.
  • Familiarity with the creation and maintenance of web pages.
  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language sufficiently to understand various forms, documentation, files and information in the department.
  • Basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication used in design techniques.
  • Proficiency to handle various office machines including but not limited to: computer, keyboard, computer software applications, calculator, copy machine and fax.
  • Ability to receive telephone calls, respond to inquiries and communicate with others.
  • Ability to drive a personal or university vehicle for the purpose of university business on an occasional basis.
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in communications, media relations, or content strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability to create original, high-level written content requiring creativity and independent judgment.
  • Strong strategic thinking and decision-making capabilities.
  • Proven experience shaping messaging and communication strategies.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the university's primary media liaison, determining messaging strategy and approach for press interactions, releases, and events.
  • Independently develop and author original content including press releases, feature stories, speeches, and strategic communications.
  • Lead editorial direction and content strategy for alumni publications, including the Eagle Magazine, ensuring alignment with institutional branding and priorities.
  • Exercise discretion in shaping institutional voice, tone, and messaging across multiple platforms and audiences.
  • Determine appropriate communication strategies to support enrollment, advancement, and institutional goals.
  • Provide creative direction and oversight to internal and external writers, designers, and consultants.
  • Evaluate and select communication channels and methods to maximize audience engagement and effectiveness.
  • Oversee content strategy for digital platforms, ensuring messaging consistency and optimization.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to translate strategic priorities into effective communication plans.
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive institutional information with discretion.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
