About The Position

The Assistant Director of Climate and Sustainability Fluency is a key member of the Office of Climate and Sustainability and advances the educational priorities of the Duke Climate Commitment. This role develops, implements, and supports climate and sustainability learning opportunities across Duke’s academic and co-curricular ecosystem. The Assistant Director collaborates with faculty, staff, students, and community partners to expand access to impactful, interdisciplinary learning experiences. This position serves as both a strategic and operational leader, ensuring climate and sustainability education is accessible, innovative, and aligned with Duke’s Climate Commitment and Climate 2030 Strategy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong organizational, project management, and communication skills
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships across diverse groups

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or higher
  • Experience in higher education program administration
  • Experience working with faculty and academic programs
  • Background in curriculum development, pedagogy, or experiential learning
  • Knowledge of climate, sustainability, or environmental fields

Responsibilities

  • Support implementation of Duke’s Climate Commitment education priorities and Climate 2030 Strategy
  • Lead or support initiatives advancing climate and sustainability learning across Duke
  • Develop and manage programs, projects, partnerships, and funding opportunities
  • Coordinate implementation efforts across schools, departments, and campus partners
  • Support governance activities, working groups, advisory committees, and strategic planning
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen climate and sustainability education
  • Support faculty in integrating climate and sustainability content into curriculum and co-curricular experiences
  • Develop and deliver workshops, trainings, and communities of practice
  • Consult with faculty and academic leaders on educational innovation and program development
  • Support course development and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Develop and support applied, experiential, and community-engaged learning opportunities
  • Build partnerships with faculty, students, and community organizations
  • Coordinate student projects, internships, and research experiences
  • Support applied learning programming and funding initiatives
  • Track program effectiveness and educational impact
  • Monitor key performance indicators aligned with Climate Commitment goals
  • Analyze and communicate program outcomes
  • Contribute to reports, presentations, and communications materials
  • Build relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external partners
  • Convene meetings, workshops, and collaborative initiatives
  • Represent OCS in committees and professional networks
  • Support OCS programs, initiatives, and events
  • Manage administrative functions including scheduling, coordination, and data tracking
  • Supervise student employees as applicable
