About The Position

We are excited to invite a passionate and experienced Assistant Director of Afterschool to join our team! Homes for the Homeless (HFH) is searching for an Assistant Director of Afterschool to support and strengthen the daily operations of our DYCD/DOMH afterschool and recreation program, located within one of our family residences in Jamaica, Queens, NY. The Assistant Director will serve as a key leader under the Director, providing ongoing oversight of staff, ensuring program quality, and driving participant engagement and recruitment. ABOUT HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS: Homes for the Homeless operates shelters for families experiencing homelessness in NYC. Our family residences are more than just a place to sleep. Families can make the most of their stay through accessing an array of onsite programs. Many of these programs are also available to people living in the local community. Our goal is to have a positive impact so families can thrive long after they leave our shelters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required (Education, Social Work, Youth Development, or related field preferred).
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in youth programming, afterschool, or recreation settings.
  • Experience with participant recruitment and family engagement.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data tracking systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision and leadership to program staff, ensuring accountability, professionalism, and quality service delivery.
  • Maintain a strong presence during program hours, actively supporting staff, and engaging with participants.
  • Oversee daily program flow, transitions, and overall structure to ensure a safe and productive environment.
  • Ensure all program activities meet DYCD/DOMH and organizational compliance standards.
  • Monitor attendance, documentation, and reporting to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Oversee completion and organization of all required paperwork, including incident reports, participant files, and program records.
  • Lead onsite and community outreach and recruitment efforts to increase participant enrollment and consistent attendance.
  • Build relationships with families to encourage program participation and retention.
  • Collaborate with case managers and other departments to identify and engage eligible youth.
  • Assist the Director with overall program operations and improvements.
  • Support staff training and onboarding as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
