About The Position

California State University, Fullerton (Cal State Fullerton) is seeking an exceptional individual to join their team as the Assistant Director of Academic Advising for the College of Engineering and Computer Science. This role, classified as Student Services Professional IV, focuses on leading and supporting a team of academic advisors and managing the day-to-day operations of the college-based advising program. The program aims to deliver equitable, top-notch advising for new and continuing undergraduate students, particularly those who have not yet declared a major. The ideal candidate will possess a positive attitude, an active and energetic mind, and demonstrate highly ethical practices with a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. The Undeclared and Academic Advising department, within the Division of Academic Affairs, supports students in navigating general education requirements, exploring academic and career interests, and making informed decisions about their educational path. The department's mission is to foster a collaborative partnership with students, where both advisor and student are equally invested in the educational process and the holistic development of the student.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution.
  • Four years of professional student services work experience including experience advising students individually and in groups, as well as the analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.
  • Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures, and practices of the program area to which assigned or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge.
  • General knowledge of the policies, practices, and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
  • General knowledge of the principles, problems, and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel and fiscal management.
  • General knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods.
  • Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Ability to advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters.
  • Ability to determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature.
  • Ability to reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations.
  • Ability to analyze and define complex organizational, policy or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
  • Ability to understand the roles and responsibilities of others and to gauge relationships accordingly by taking into account the variety of the interrelationships, motivations and goals of the members of the organization served.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative and harmonious working relationships in circumstances which involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment.
  • Must comply with the requirement outlined in CSU Executive Order 1083, revised July 17, 2017, as the person holding this position is considered a limited mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, clinical psychology, social work, or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
  • A Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university and the appropriate internship or clinical training in a relevant field may be substituted for two years of professional experience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with students and employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Experience using learning management systems (e.g., Canvas).
  • Experience with data analytics and technology tools as they relate to planning and data-driven program development and assessment.
  • Experience leading the development of assessment practices for academic advising programs.
  • Strong understanding of, and experience contributing to, complex, dynamic academic advising and/or student success programs in contexts such as Cal State Fullerton.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead academic advising practices and programs for new and continuing students using critical student development theories and cutting-edge advising frameworks.
  • Develop relational advising models and coordinate equitable academic advising practices to increase student retention and success.
  • Empower students in their ability to explore educational opportunities and achieve academic success through an engaged, equity-driven, student-centered approach.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of trends in academic advising, academic advising technologies, and changes in academic programs and transition requirements.
  • Utilize institutional data to work with academic leaders on enrollment, retention, and degree completion efforts.
  • Develop and coordinate projects and collaborate with campus partners in support of student success initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.
