About The Position

This role supports the Director in all aspects of producing the Fall Play at NWHS. The Assistant Director will work collaboratively with the Director and production staff to guide students through the entire production process, from casting and rehearsals to technical execution and post-production duties. Key responsibilities include assisting with play selection, scheduling, auditions, casting, training student production teams, overseeing technical needs, and managing publicity. The Assistant Director must demonstrate aptitude for assigned tasks, exhibit ethical practices, and serve as a role model for students.

Responsibilities

  • Determine, with the Director, the play that best suits the needs and abilities of student performers and the production team.
  • Create and communicate rehearsal and production schedules in collaboration with the Director and production staff.
  • Ensure production staff attendance at all calls.
  • Participate in regular production meetings with the Director, Technical Director, and Performing Arts Center Manager.
  • Determine projected production needs (scenic, costuming, props, lighting, sound, publicity) with the Director.
  • Prepare audition materials in collaboration with production staff.
  • Conduct auditions and call-backs with the Director.
  • Cast the show with the Director.
  • Determine student production team roles and assignments with the Director and Technical Director.
  • Train student stage managers and production teams in collaboration with production staff and the Performing Arts Center Manager, covering roles, responsibilities, safety, and facility orientation.
  • Collaborate with production staff to design and build or purchase technical theatre needs within budget limitations.
  • Assist stage managers in creating and communicating daily rehearsal reports.
  • Conduct rehearsals and block portions of the show as determined with the Director.
  • Design publicity branding, logos, posters, and programs in collaboration with production staff.
  • Oversee the distribution of publicity materials.
  • Coordinate publicity efforts with the district Communications Department with the Director.
  • Supervise students from the first call time through post-show duties for all tech/dress rehearsals and performances.
  • Strike the show following the last performance in collaboration with production staff and the Performing Arts Center Manager.
  • Return rented or borrowed materials, including scripts.
  • Create and execute fundraisers and manage associated logistical responsibilities as needed.
