About The Position

The Bush School in Washington, D.C. is seeking an Assistant Director, Career Programming to play a pivotal role in empowering students to achieve their career goals while expanding the School’s employer network. This highly collaborative, student-focused position designs and delivers innovative career development programs, provides personalized career coaching, and cultivates meaningful partnerships with employers and alumni to support internship and employment outcomes. The role serves as a key ambassador for Bush School talent, promoting students and academic programs to organizations across the region and nation. You will have the opportunity to develop engaging workshops and resources, manage recruitment events and employer relations, and drive continuous program improvement while encouraging student success. Working closely with colleagues in both Washington, D.C. and College Station, the Assistant Director helps advance a unified vision for career services while creating exceptional opportunities that prepare Bush School students for impactful careers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six years of full-time professional level experience in academic, business, government, or nonprofit sector; three years of government or public sector experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written communication, presentation, and advising skills to include career advising skills.
  • The ability to work well in a team environment, work collaboratively and closely with coworkers and constituents (i.e., students, faculty, university administrators, employee executives and managers).
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to prioritize work and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Working knowledge of computers; business level knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • The ability to utilize a learning management system (LMS).
  • Strong analytical, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of working within the constraints of a budget.
  • Knowledge of the present and potential future applications of technology and online resources.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with high level executives responsible for hiring graduate students in public administration and international affairs.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in public administration or international affairs, human resource development or management, student personnel/development, vocational counseling, educational administration, or business administration.
  • Three or more years of professional experience in academic, government, nonprofit, or other public sector experience, including at least 1 year in career services, career counseling, human resource management/development, staffing and recruiting, or marketing.
  • Knowledge of the Security Clearance Process.
  • Knowledge of the dynamics of the employment marketplace, preferably for public administration, nonprofit management, and international affairs graduate students, as well as the employers and an ability to address those individual and group needs.
  • Marketing/public relations skills.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with students from graduate degree programs for one-on-one and group advising on resume development, interviewing skills, salary negotiation, and other career planning/job search techniques.
  • Provide advising and support to former students as needed, including those facing career barriers.
  • Manage specialized internship programs for graduate students at the D.C. Teaching site.
  • Ensure advising and programming are accessible and inclusive, addressing the unique needs of a student population.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records in the career management system and analyze advising outcomes.
  • Schedule, develop, and deliver comprehensive career readiness workshops online and in person, enhancing students’ career skills for public sector, nonprofit, international development, consulting, and other fields.
  • Develop, update, and curate relevant digital and print career resources, ensuring materials reflect current labor market trends.
  • Manage collection, review, and tracking of career readiness deliverables, maintaining records to qualify students for summer unpaid internship/language immersion funding.
  • Plan annual and special career preparation events (e.g., etiquette dinners, mock interviews), ensuring all aspects are accessible to diverse student populations.
  • Cultivate and expand professional networks with local, national, and sector-specific employers, alumni, and industry leaders to generate student opportunities.
  • Maintain ongoing relationships with employers, soliciting feedback and coordinating employer information sessions and on-site activities.
  • Actively represent the DC Teaching Site at employer events, professional conferences, and community functions to build and maintain strategic partnerships.
  • Secure and facilitate employer site visits, alumni engagement, and other experiential learning activities.
  • Partner with Career Services, Recruiting & Admissions, Public Service Leadership Program, and other university units to increase awareness of internship, employment, and fellowship opportunities among students, faculty, and staff.
  • Participate in cross-campus and university-wide initiatives and committees as assigned.
  • Develop and manage budgets for career programming, events, and workshops, ensuring cost-effectiveness and compliance with university policies.
  • Assess the effectiveness of advising, programming, and employer engagement by collecting, analyzing, and reporting student outcome data (e.g., placement rates, satisfaction).
  • Prepare comprehensive reports for school leadership and accreditation purposes.
  • Supervise and train student assistants or interns as needed.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development for self and encourage staff and students to participate in relevant conference and training opportunities.
