The Assistant Designer begins their career on the Design Team at Macy’s Hotel Collection, actively engaging in the process of learning the company culture, area, brand aesthetics, and principles. Requirements

  • Ability to develop an understanding and skills in researching category, trend, and customer preferences
  • Competency in preparing presentation materials and setting up for design-led meetings.
  • Strong skills for actively participating in cross-functional team meetings, summarizing action points for the manager, and collaborating closely with team leaders to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to create flat mechanical sketches for design development packages, work with Adobe and CLO programs for style, color, and pattern development, and participate in creating and distributing tech packages.
  • Establish relationships and maintain regular communication with cross-functional partners throughout the development cycle.
  • Willingness to learn on the job, identify opportunities, and develop an assortment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, crucial for effective collaboration and achieving results.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, and Adobe Design programs
  • 1-2 years of prior experience in soft home, interior design, or home textile design OR a strong passion for/interest in this category of business. You must be home design and interiors obsessed!
  • Familiarity with textile development and design processes.
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field, such as retail or a design internship.
  • Performing essential job functions such as communication, collaboration, and use of office and computer systems.
  • Ability to access and review written and electronic information, and to move within the work environment and interact with workplace materials as needed to carry out job responsibilities.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) is a plus
  • Strong color sense and print sense, with the ability to view and differentiate the color spectrum

Responsibilities

  • Develop an understanding and skills in researching category, trend, and customer preferences across the Hotel Collection’s soft home brand portfolio.
  • Assist the Design Team in aligning with the Private Brand direction by incorporating materials, trims, silhouettes, colors, and patterns across multiple soft home product categories from bedding to accent décor (i.e. printed and woven duvets, throw pillows, sheets, etc.).
  • Expand design knowledge by supporting the team in executing a strategic vision with a progressive, customer-centric approach, contributing to overall product strategy and merchandise objectives.
  • Assist in preparing presentation materials and set-up for design-led meetings.
  • Contribute to in-season design changes for the department and vendors.
  • Strengthen skills for active participation in cross-functional team meetings, summarizing action points for the manager.
  • Collaborate closely with the Senior Designer to meet deadlines and understand priority and workload expectations.
  • Assist and develop skills in creating flat mechanical sketches for design development packages for printed and woven soft home products, including complex woven jacquards.
  • Participate in creating and distributing tech packages.
  • Assist in approving strike-offs, samples, and other development materials.
  • Acquire skills in using Adobe and CLO programs for style, color, and pattern development.
  • Review and provide feedback on development samples.
  • Establish relationships and maintain regular communication with cross-functional partners throughout the development cycle.
  • Learn on the job how to identify opportunities and develop an assortment.
