Assistant Designer, Kids Footwear
About The Position
American Exchange Group is seeking an Assistant Footwear Designer to support the design and development of Girls & Boys footwear across licensed brands and private label programs for the off-price market. The role involves taking direction from the Design Team, expanding on inspiration, and incorporating trend and market research into brand-appropriate styles. The designer will create designs using CADs, manage sample check-ins, and resolve sample-related issues. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) is required for creating artwork, preparing presentations, and developing tech packs. The position also includes assisting in material sourcing, managing design libraries, and preparing development packages. The ideal candidate must be detail-oriented, highly organized, able to manage time effectively, multitask, and adapt quickly to a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines. Basic knowledge of footwear construction and strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with international teams and clients are essential. A desire to learn and take on new challenges is also important.
Requirements
- Degree in Footwear Design, Industrial Design, Accessories Design, or similar
- Highly skilled in Photoshop
- Proficient in Illustrator
- Ability to research market trend information
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Organized, dedicated, and process-driven team player with heavy attention to detail
- Self-motivated with ability to work in fast-paced environment, prioritize workload successfully and execute projects with fast-turnaround, under budget, ahead of tight deadlines.
- High energy level and a passion for your work and the overall business
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to be flexible for business needs
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Basic knowledge in footwear construction

Responsibilities
- Takes direction from Design Team and expands on direction/inspiration, contributing their own voice and vision.
- Works innovative designs into brand-appropriate styles based on trend and market research.
- Creates viable/appropriate designs through CADs.
- Manages sample check-in and collaborates with appropriate groups to resolve sample-related issues.
- Uses Illustrator/Photoshop to create artwork for development.
- Participates in seasonal trend presentations using Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
- Prepares presentation decks and presents design ideas to leadership and customers.
- Prepares development packages for the Footwear Collection.
- Assists in sourcing materials, managing design libraries, and preparing samples.
- Effectively manages time and ability to multi-task.
- Creates tech packs including specs, technical information, and sample/proto design comments.
- Adapts quickly, meets deadlines, and works in a high-paced environment.
- Possesses basic knowledge in footwear construction.
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with China team, clients, and factories.
- Is detail-oriented and highly organized.
- Reviews development samples in a timely manner and updates tech packs to reflect agreed-upon changes and modifications.
- Shows a desire to learn, acquire new skills, and take on new challenges.
- Performs other related job functions as needed at the discretion of the manager.
