About The Position

The Arizona Historical Society is a nonprofit organization and state agency established in 1864. AHS connects people through the power of Arizona’s history. AHS collects, preserves, and tells the story of Arizona’s past through museum exhibitions, libraries and archives, historic sites, educational programs, and the Journal of Arizona History. AHS seeks to be the driving force strengthening Arizona’s communities by promoting history through leadership, partnership, and scholarship. The Assistant Deputy Director reports directly to the Executive Director, providing strategic oversight and operational leadership for the Library and Archives, Education, and Pioneer Museum divisions. This role aligns curatorial, educational, and archival services with the organization's mission, driving public engagement, preserving local heritage, and expanding community access to historical and educational resources.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university program, and minimum of 5 years of experience in a related occupation.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate division managers, archivists, curators, and educators, and foster a collaborative work environment that encourages professional growth and cross-departmental projects.
  • Guide curatorial staff in the design, installation, and maintenance of permanent and rotating exhibits at the Pioneer Museum; and Facility Oversight: Ensure the museum facilities and historical structures meet safety, environmental, and accessibility standards for artifact preservation and public safety.
  • Ensure the archives and library are maintained to professional curatorial standards, managing access for researchers, genealogists, and the general public working with established policies for the acquisition, cataloging, preservation, and de-accessioning of physical and digital archival materials and library assets.
  • Oversee the creation of engaging, accessible educational programming, school tours, workshops, and lectures tied to the region's history; and Community Outreach: Partner with local schools, universities, community centers, and cultural organizations to maximize program participation and relevance.
  • Collaborate with the executive team to develop and execute long-term strategic plans for the Library, Archives, Pioneer Museum, and Education programs.
  • Lead the transition and optimization of digital collections, databases, and online access to ensure historical records are accessible to a wider audience.
