Position Summary The Assistant Deli Manager supports the Deli Manager in overseeing all aspects of deli department operations, including customer service, food safety, production, merchandising, inventory control, labor management, and associate development. This position helps ensure the department consistently delivers fresh, high-quality products while achieving sales, shrink, and profitability goals and maintaining compliance with all company standards.

Requirements

  • Previous deli, food service, restaurant, grocery retail, or fresh foods experience preferred.
  • Prior supervisory, lead, or management experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of food preparation, merchandising, and inventory management preferred.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and safe food handling practices.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to product quality.
  • Basic math and computer proficiency.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, twisting, kneeling, and repetitive hand movements.
  • Ability to work in refrigerated environments and around heated food preparation equipment.
  • Ability to safely operate slicers, ovens, fryers, mixers, and other department equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in managing the daily operations of the Deli Department.
  • Ensure service cases, displays, hot food areas, and self-service sections are fully stocked, clean, and maintained to company standards.
  • Monitor product quality, freshness, rotation, and code dating.
  • Support food production planning to ensure product availability and minimize waste.
  • Assist with ordering, receiving, inventory control, and product replenishment.
  • Execute merchandising programs, seasonal promotions, and sales initiatives.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and create a positive shopping experience.
  • Assist customers with product selection, special orders, catering inquiries, and meal solutions.
  • Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Promote deli products through suggestive selling and product knowledge.
  • Foster a customer-first culture among all department associates.
  • Assist with recruiting, onboarding, training, coaching, and developing deli associates.
  • Provide daily direction, support, and work assignments to department team members.
  • Help establish performance expectations and accountability standards.
  • Promote teamwork, engagement, and a positive work environment.
  • Lead by example through professionalism, dependability, and excellent customer service.
  • Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health, and safety regulations.
  • Monitor proper handling, preparation, storage, and rotation of deli products.
  • Maintain temperature logs, cleaning schedules, and sanitation records.
  • Ensure department equipment is properly cleaned and maintained.
  • Support department readiness for inspections, audits, and food safety reviews.
  • Assist in managing inventory levels to maximize sales and minimize shrink.
  • Monitor ordering accuracy and inventory movement.
  • Verify pricing, signage, and promotional displays are accurate and current.
  • Support shrink reduction initiatives through proper production planning and inventory controls.
  • Identify opportunities to improve sales through effective merchandising and product presentation.
  • Assist in achieving department sales, gross margin, labor, and shrink goals.
  • Monitor waste and support cost-control initiatives.
  • Support labor planning and productivity improvement efforts.
  • Review department performance metrics and assist with action planning.
  • Help maintain operational efficiency and profitability.
