About The Position

Olathe Public Schools is seeking an Assistant Debate Coach for the High School. This is a one-year assignment appointed by the principal. The role involves supporting the head coach in managing the debate program, adhering to district guidelines, and fostering a positive and educational environment for students. The assistant coach will work with the head coach to communicate expectations to parents and participants, maintain a professional attitude, and ensure compliance with all district and KSHSAA policies and regulations.

Requirements

  • One-year assignment as appointed by the principal.
  • Adherence to district guidelines for fundraising, trips, money management, honoring of contracts, credit card use and transportation.
  • Ability to teach and coach in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Maintain a professional attitude in all situations.
  • Provide an environment that promotes good sportsmanship.
  • Comply with all USD #233 Board policies.
  • Ensure no initiation or hazing activities take place.
  • Monitor the safety of equipment, playing surfaces, and performance environments.
  • Maintain detailed practice plans.
  • Never leave athletes unsupervised.
  • Provide detailed and repeated instruction with regards to the performance of high-risk activities.
  • Adhere to the district’s lightning and hot weather guidelines.
  • Evaluate injuries and lack of physical conditioning.
  • Comply with all KSHSAA and USD #233 rules and regulations, including participant eligibility, required physical examinations, district substance abuse policy, and other KSHSAA Handbook guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Model district guiding principles of Children First, Respect for All, Teamwork, Excellence in Quality, and Commitment to Individual Needs.
  • Fulfill applicable roles and responsibilities as directed by the school’s administration and head coach, including adherence to district guidelines for fundraising, trips, money management, honoring of contracts, credit card use and transportation.
  • Work with the head coach to conduct a pre-season meeting with parents to communicate expectations, guidelines, schedules, and district policies.
  • Provide information on participation criteria, sportsmanship, practice and game schedules, transportation, insurance, injury handling (including concussions), parent-coach communication, substance abuse, and lettering guidelines to participants and administration.
  • Teach and coach in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and adhere to the district’s guiding principles for coaches.
  • Provide an environment that promotes good sportsmanship.
  • Comply with and communicate to participants/parents all USD #233 Board policies, including the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure all team members understand the dangers associated with hazing and ensure that no initiation or hazing activities take place.
  • Monitor the safety of equipment, playing surfaces, and performance environments.
  • Understand and implement the duties of any coach, including maintaining detailed practice plans, never leaving athletes unsupervised, providing detailed and repeated instruction with regards to the performance of high-risk activities, adhering to district lightning and hot weather guidelines, and the evaluation of injuries and lack of physical conditioning.
  • Comply with all KSHSAA and USD #233 rules and regulations, including participant eligibility, required physical examinations, district substance abuse policy, and other KSHSAA Handbook guidelines.
