About The Position

As part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University is seeking an Assistant/Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs who will promote our Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by being responsible for the academic and administrative oversight of the third and fourth years of the osteopathic medical curriculum and engages in components of clinical education that occur in the pre-clinical years of the curriculum. The Assistant/Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs is responsible for monitoring and coordinating the psychomotor and entrustable professional activities aspects of student learning throughout the curriculum. This includes early identification of "at-risk" students and assuring appropriate and well-timed remediation for clerkship-related coursework as well as interventions to mediate the risk of failure on the COMLEX-USA Level 2 CE examination.

Requirements

  • A DO or MD degree with AOA or ABMS board certification.
  • At least five (5) years of experience teaching in academic institutions.
  • At least five (5) years of leadership experience in academic (hospital or related settings).
  • A proven track record as a leader, teacher, and public servant in a variety of settings.
  • Hold an unlimited license to practice medicine in the state of Indiana.
  • Experience with COCA accreditation preferred.
  • Requires occasional travel as needed.
  • Work hours necessary to perform job requirements satisfactorily on a regular basis.
  • Manage absence from work in responsible manner to ensure service to clients, work teams, and coworkers.
  • Comply with Marian University policies and practices and seeking clarification of them when necessary.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Have the ability to assist in management of budgets.
  • Engage in scholarly activity and research.
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills to successfully engage with people.
  • Have experience interpreting the COCA, AOA, ACGME, ACCME, and other applicable accreditation standards.
  • Have knowledge of levels of the COMLEX-USA and steps of the USMLE licensure exams.
  • Be able to establish liaison with a broad range of campus entities with successful and collaborative interaction.
  • Effectively represent the WCOM with professionalism and effective collaborative interactions with external entities, including clinical partners, representatives of educational organizations, and governmental agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees, develops, and refines the clerkship curriculum as established by the Curriculum Committee and based on best practices for clinical education.
  • Partners with students, faculty, staff, and clinical partners to provide effective UME to GME transition.
  • Contributes to the pre-clerkship curriculum and engages with the longitudinal curriculum through collaboration with the Assistant/Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Clinical Science faculty/staff.
  • Facilitates and participates in bi-directional communication with clinical partners on regular and as needed basis, including but not limited to regular visits to clinical sites.
  • Creates mutually shared goals with internal and external partners.
  • Establishes, develops, maintains, and expands clinical relationships with hospitals and clinics to support clerkships and graduate medical education.
  • Identifies health system partners to increase quality and quantity of clinical training.
  • Builds relationships across the region to increase MU-WCOM's footprint and impact.
  • Provides oversight of the Osteopathic Principles and Practice Curriculum across the academic continuum (1st -4th year).
  • Develops, provides, and promotes faculty/preceptor development sessions for clinical partners (including sessions for residents).
  • Provides site comparability reports, feedback and suggestions to clinical partners.
  • Ensures adequacy of and safe clinical learning environments for medical students.
  • Ensures that needs and expectations of clinical sites are managed in accordance with the affiliation agreements arranged between the sites and the school, and are in keeping with accreditation requirements.
  • Participates in preparation for and conduct of COCA accreditation site visits.
  • Oversees and ensures adherence to clerkship - related COCA policies.
  • Develops and manages policies and ensure their regular implementation and integration across all teaching sites.
  • Develops and manages a fiscally responsible budget for the clerkship curriculum.
  • Develops and implements learning and advising strategies for preparation of students for licensure examinations (specifically Level 2CE).
  • Serves as one of the sponsors of the Professional Identity Formation Series.
  • Partners with other faculty across health professions (internal and external) to provide Interprofessional Education Experiences.
  • Creates new opportunities in the community for students to increase the reach and impact of MU and MU-WCOM.
  • Contributes to the advising processes, procedures, and activities to support MU-WCOM students in their pursuit of desired GME placement.
  • Contributes to teaching across the continuum of the curriculum.
  • Supervises, evaluates, and provides professional development of the clinical chairs and/or other faculty in the clinical affairs department, as indicated on the organizational chart.
  • Contributes to the selection and development of MU-WCOM faculty addendum.
  • Engages in teaching, service, and scholarly activity and research.
  • Promotes and fosters an innovative teaching and learning environment conducive to academic excellence.
  • Coordinates activities consistent with the mission, strategic goals, and objectives of MU and MU-WCOM.
  • Advances the vision and strategies of the Dean for the efficient and effective operation of the WCOM.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean of WCOM or the SVP of Health Professions.
