About The Position

Perform various tasks related to school breakfast and lunch. Serve on the line. Clean all cooking areas. Wash dishes and lunch trays. Count money at the end of the day. Assist Cafeteria Managers and Food Service Director when needed. This role ensures the safety of students and performs duties of server, cashier, dishwasher, prep cook, etc. as assigned. It involves receiving payment for cafeteria lunches and milk, potentially operating a point of sale system, restocking milk and condiments, maintaining records of free and reduced lunches, and handling confidential information appropriately. The position requires positive interaction with staff, students, parents, and the community, and attendance at required meetings and in-services. The Assistant Cook is responsible for ensuring ample supply of napkins, silverware, straws, and condiments, assisting with restocking and general cleanup, and maintaining cleanliness of cooking, serving, and cafeteria areas. Meal preparation, serving, and dish room operations, including ensuring proper function and temperature of dish machines and sanitizer levels, are also key responsibilities. The role promotes good public relations, serves as a role model, and requires basic computer skills for emails and spreadsheets. Adherence to sanitary standards, auditing the daily milk bill, completing timesheets, and responding to routine inquiries are also part of the duties. Other duties may be assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Less than one year related experience
  • CPR preferred
  • ServSafe Food Handler or equivalent
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
  • Effective, active listening skills
  • Organizational and problem solving skills
  • Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings and labels
  • Ability to operate a cash register
  • Basic math/bookkeeping skills

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of computers skills, emails, and spreadsheets
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety of students
  • Performs duties of server, cashier, dishwasher, prep cook, etc. as assigned by the Cafeteria Manager
  • Receive payment for cafeteria lunches and milk and may operate point of sale during lunch periods
  • Restock milk when needed
  • Fill condiments when needed
  • Keep current list of free and reduced price lunches
  • Ensure that appropriate paperwork is completed
  • Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., free and reduced lunch students
  • Interact in a positive manner with staff, students, parents and community
  • Attend meetings and in-services as required
  • See that napkins, silverware, straws, and condiments are in ample supply during serving of students
  • Help restock items and general cleanup
  • Assist in cleaning cooking area, serving areas, and cafeteria tables and floors
  • Assists in meal prep as assigned
  • Assists in serving meals and steam table set-up and cleaning
  • Assists in dish room set up at the three-compartment sink and dish machine
  • Ensure proper function and temperature recording of dish machine, wash and rinse temperatures
  • Ensure proper PPM of sanitizer in three-compartment sink and that all chemicals are properly functioning in three-sink compartment and dish machine
  • Promote good public relations
  • Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as responsible citizens
  • Adhere to rigid sanitary standards in work and attire
  • Complete food services timesheets
  • Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Cafeteria Manager
