About The Position

MGT Insurance is seeking an Assistant Controller to lead its accounting operations. As MGT continues to scale, this role will take ownership of the monthly close, accounting controls, financial controls, and external audit. The Assistant Controller will oversee the close and reporting process across five consolidated entities under both GAAP and statutory accounting requirements. This individual will lead and develop the accounting team, strengthen the control environment, and serve as the primary relationship owner for external auditors, all within a modern, largely in-house technology platform. MGT is an AI-first company, and this commitment extends to the accounting function, with automated pipelines and AI agents performing a growing share of reconciliation work, while professional judgment remains the control that gates the close. Key initiatives for the first year include implementing close management software, establishing balance sheet integrity across all five entities by defining and enforcing account reconciliation standards, and establishing audit and examination readiness at scale through documented accounting policy, source-captured evidence, clear statutory-to-GAAP bridges, and a scalable PBC process.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of accounting experience in insurance, financial services, or public accounting serving those clients.
  • 3+ years directly managing accounting professionals, with a demonstrated record of developing staff and elevating the quality of their work.
  • Demonstrated ownership of a multi-entity month-end close and consolidation, including review of work prepared by others.
  • Experience serving as a primary counterparty to external auditors.
  • Strong command of US GAAP and statutory accounting; working knowledge of P&C insurance accounting.
  • Hands-on experience with a modern ERP; NetSuite strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply AI tools and emerging technologies to automate workflows, improve productivity, and strengthen internal controls, with specific examples of recurring work eliminated.
  • Advanced Excel and strong analytical capability.
  • Comfort with SQL, or the willingness to develop it.
  • Sound judgment and clear communication, with the ability to build process in a developing control environment and to escalate issues appropriately.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA license, or active progress toward one.
  • P&C carrier, MGA/MGU, reinsurance, or program business experience, including statutory/NAIC reporting, premium taxes, bordereaux, ceding commissions, trust accounting, producer commissions, or TPA claims flows.
  • Experience implementing a close-management, reconciliation, or reporting platform such as FloQast, BlackLine, Numeric, or Workiva.
  • Experience at a venture-backed company scaling toward a Series C or beyond.
  • Big 4 or national firm foundation.

Responsibilities

  • Own the close: Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close across all five entities. Serve as the primary reviewer, approving journal entries, reconciliations, roll-forwards, and flux analyses prepared by the team. Set the close calendar and hold the organization to it.
  • Manage GAAP and statutory reporting: Deliver the consolidated GAAP financial statements and the statutory financial statements reviewed by regulators and rating agencies. Own the annual and quarterly NAIC statements, state insurance department filings, and premium tax filings across the licensed footprint. Maintain a clear, well-documented statutory-to-GAAP bridge.
  • Manage the audit: Serve as the primary liaison to financial auditors, coordinating the PBC list, managing timelines, and resolving technical matters directly. Support the preparation of responses to financial examinations and regulatory inquiries.
  • Author accounting policy: Prepare technical accounting memoranda for non-standard transactions, including new program structures, reinsurance arrangements, product launches, and entity changes. Establish and maintain the accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls required to support the company's growth.
  • Lead the team: Lead and develop the accounting team. Set priorities, review work product, invest in the professional growth of staff, and foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
  • Build and automate the systems: Own the accounting architecture in NetSuite and partner with Engineering, Data Science, and FP&A on the data pipelines that move policy, claims, and billing information into the general ledger. Identify recurring manual work and treat automation as the default solution.
  • Partner beyond Finance: Work directly with Operations, Product, Engineering, Data, Actuarial, and FP&A. A meaningful portion of this role involves data and systems work in addition to traditional accounting responsibilities.

Benefits

  • Annual base salary, plus a target performance bonus and equity.
