About The Position

GrowthX AI is seeking its first Assistant Controller to build and own the Accounting function. This is a 0-to-1 role where you will establish the accounting infrastructure, moving from an outsourced bookkeeping model to an in-house function that scales with the business and withstands audits. You will report to the Head of Finance and be responsible for the end-to-end integrity of the books, including close, reporting, AR/collections, AP oversight, revenue recognition, systems, and controls. A key part of the role involves bringing outsourced bookkeeping in-house and developing processes, controls, and documentation. The company operates on a hybrid model with subscription and services revenue, presenting complex revenue recognition scenarios. You will address immediate challenges such as aging AR, complex contract structures, multi-state tax exposure, and system integrations.

Requirements

  • Prior experience as a Controller, or as a strong Assistant Controller / Accounting Manager ready to run the function independently, ideally at a high-growth Series A SaaS company.
  • Experience building or materially maturing an accounting function (0 to 1 experience).
  • Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP, including ASC 606 revenue recognition for subscription and services revenue, with the ability to reason through nonstandard revenue scenarios.
  • AI-forward: daily use of AI tools to improve efficiency in close, reconciliations, and reporting, with a clear point of view on automation.
  • Comfortable owning the close independently.
  • Ability to think like a business partner, understanding accounting and cash implications of business decisions.
  • Clear and direct communication skills, able to explain judgments to non-finance executives.
  • Self-directed and comfortable with ambiguity in a remote, async, high-autonomy environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Campfire, or a comparable modern GL (Ramp, Rippling, NetSuite, etc.).
  • Experience building an accounting function at a startup from the ground up.
  • Experience in a hybrid subscription + services revenue model.
  • Experience insourcing an accounting function that was previously outsourced, or transitioning a company off an outside bookkeeping firm.
  • Experience through a first audit or a first institutional financing round.

Responsibilities

  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, directing the outsourced accounting firm and working to bring close, bookkeeping, and AP execution in-house.
  • Prepare and ensure GAAP-compliant financial statements; analyze balance sheet and P&L movements and investigate variances.
  • Own AR and collections, including invoicing, payment application, aging, and direct customer follow-up.
  • Own AP oversight and vendor management, including approval workflows and vendor account hygiene.
  • Work through complex accounting topics including ASC 606 revenue recognition, contract modifications, and billing structures for subscription and services revenue.
  • Own core finance systems (Campfire, Carta, billing/payment stack) and their integration roadmap.
  • Establish accounting processes, approval workflows, documentation, and internal controls for a growing SaaS company.
  • Review customer and vendor contracts for accounting, billing, and revenue recognition implications.
  • Own equity administration, including option grant processing, cap table accuracy, and coordination with legal and the cap table system.
  • Support treasury functions, including cash positioning, inter-account transfers, and forecasting cash needs.
  • Coordinate tax and compliance with external advisors, including multi-state filings.
  • Partner with People Ops on payroll accounting, compensation changes, and compliance.
  • Prepare monthly reporting packages for lenders and investors.
  • Build audit-readiness through documentation and controls.
