About The Position

This position is located at the Alhambra Corporate Office. The Assistant Controller is responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely management of financial statements, general ledgers, journal entries, and supporting workpapers. This role plays a key part in the preparation of monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP and the closing schedule, and keeps the Controller informed of significant financial reporting issues. The Assistant Controller is also integral in the recordation of significant exposure areas such as Worker's Comp., Group Health, and Payroll Liabilities, reviewing analysis and keeping supervisors informed of monthly bookings. Additionally, they review detailed balance sheet and operations analysis prepared by Accountants and provide feedback. The role requires maintaining an adequate level of technical competence, including a strong understanding of general accounting principles, awareness of changes in the healthcare environment, active participation in continuing professional education, and proficiency in PC applications. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential, with the ability to present ideas clearly, concisely, and professionally, adjusting communication styles as needed and demonstrating the ability to sell ideas. A supportive professional attitude towards department goals and objectives, and timely follow-up with staff to ensure project completion, are also expected. The Assistant Controller supervises and motivates staff by developing their skills, directing their efforts, and evaluating their performance, taking responsibility for their team, ensuring timely personal development plans and evaluations, reviewing their work, and regularly communicating performance to their supervisor. They work well with other members of the financial team, actively supporting colleagues and participating in team activities and projects. The Assistant Controller works with the Controller to direct operational plans, resource allocation, and departmental policies consistent with the organization's mission. They collaborate on planning services in response to community needs, communicate departmental plans, participate in strategic planning and budgeting meetings, and engage in the organization's decision-making processes, including selecting contract services. They assist the Controller in organizing services, provide input on personnel functions, and institute corrective action when necessary. They facilitate innovation, motivate staff, assess staff qualifications, ensure timely performance reviews, and provide orientation for new employees. Specific duties include performing staff duties during high workload periods and completing annual goals. They collaborate on departmental budgets, ensuring adherence to budget limits for capital expenditures, operating costs, and wages/salaries. The role involves establishing expectations and plans for quality improvement, systematically assessing and implementing improvements, and submitting required reports. The employee must be willing and able to perform additional duties as needed, follow established policies, and maintain a professional attitude with minimal substantiated complaints. They participate in group projects and staff meetings with constructive suggestions, communicate effectively about problems, request assistance appropriately, maintain confidentiality, resolve issues proactively, project a positive professional image, attend staff meetings, and complete assigned work within their shift.   • Performs staff duties during periods of high work load periods. Completes annual goals and objectives as set.
  • Collaborates with appropriate staff in the development of departmental budget. Consistently remains within established budget. Capital expenditures not to exceed budget. Operating costs not to exceed 2.5% of budget. Wages/Salaries not to exceed 2.5% of budget. Budget completed on time.
  • Establishes expectations and plans, sets priorities and manages processes to measure, systematically assess, and implement improvements and maintain achievements within the department. Complies and submits required monthly summary report to Quality Improvement Director by specified deadline.
  • Employee has the willingness and ability to perform additional duties and responsibilities in different areas of the department on an as-needed basis or as determined by management.
  • Follows established hospital and department policies.

Responsibilities

  • Insure that Financial statements, general ledgers, journal entries, supporting workpapers and management are managed in a correct and timely manner.
  • Monthly financial statements are prepared in accordance with the Monthly Financial Statement Closing Schedule.
  • Financial Statements are prepared in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Keep Controller informed of significant financial reporting issues.
  • Play an integral role in the recordation of significant exposure areas (i.e. Worker's Comp., Group Health, Payroll Liab., etc.). Review analysis and keep supervisors informed regarding monthly bookings.
  • Review detailed balance sheet analysis and operations analysis prepared by Accountants. Provide review comments as appropriate.
