Assistant Controller Rummel Construction, Inc. is a Heavy Civil General Contractor specializing in mass excavation and paving, serving the Southwest United States since 1996. We are currently looking for an experienced Assistant Controller to join our Accounting Department at our Scottsdale office. This role will serve as a key partner to the Controller, supporting daily accounting operations while helping lead and develop the accounting team. The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting experience, attention to detail, and the ability to step into a leadership role when needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required)
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of general accounting principles and financial reporting
  • Advanced Excel skills

Nice To Haves

  • CPA license
  • Experience in the construction industry
  • Familiarity with job costing and WIP reporting
  • Experience with Viewpoint Vista or similar ERP systems
  • Knowledge of Arizona Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT)

Responsibilities

  • Support the Controller in overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, including General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation of journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Assist with financial reports, including WIP schedules and job cost analysis
  • Review balance sheet reconciliations and assist with variance and expense analysis
  • Help ensure accurate setup and maintenance of construction projects within the accounting system
  • Assist with preparation for annual financial, 401(k), and insurance audits
  • Support payroll tax reporting, filings, and compliance activities
  • Assist with maintaining state and local tax registrations, licenses, and reporting requirements
  • Partner with project managers and operations teams to support job cost tracking and financial accuracy
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to accounting staff and assist with training and development
  • Serve as backup to the Controller and provide cross-functional support within the department
