About The Position

The Commonwealth's Attorney's Office for Chesterfield County is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Commonwealth Attorney. This role involves the prosecution of criminal cases, including misdemeanor and felony charges, in various courts within Chesterfield County and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Responsibilities may extend to participation in treatment court dockets, staying current on sentencing alternatives, and potentially handling administrative and civil legal matters. Applicants may be hired at either the Assistant Commonwealth Attorney I or II level, depending on their experience and qualifications. Newly licensed attorneys are encouraged to apply. This position is part of an approved Career Development Plan (CDP) offering career progression and potential salary incentives based on performance, qualifications, and experience, subject to funding.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Thorough knowledge of State and Federal laws and court decisions as they relate to the Criminal Justice Process.
  • Discretion in decision-making process.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with staff and other agencies and departments.
  • Minimum of three years of criminal practice/trial experience (for Assistant Commonwealth Attorney II) or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Successfully passing a pre-employment drug test.
  • Successfully passing an FBI criminal background check.
  • Successfully passing education/degree verification.
  • Successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check for CJIS Security Policy compliance.

  • Verbal and written fluency in both English and Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Participation in treatment court dockets.

  • Handling administrative and civil legal responsibilities as required by the Commonwealth Attorney.
