About The Position

Brown University Athletics and Recreation is seeking candidates for the Assistant Coach, Women’s Rugby position. Located in Providence, Rhode Island, and a member of the Ivy League, our intercollegiate athletics program consists of 38 varsity teams with approximately 1,000 athletes who participate within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA-DI). This Assistant Coach serves as a second assistant, focusing on specific skill areas of player development and recruiting. This role works directly with athletes on skill-building and assists with administrative and logistical tasks such as travel to gain experience in program operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 1-2 years of coaching experience or a combination of competitive playing experience and/or coaching experience at the collegiate level.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and a strong desire for professional development.
  • Solid communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong understanding of the sport’s rules, techniques, and strategies.
  • Knowledge of athlete development principles, including strength, conditioning, and skill progression.
  • Familiarity with NCAA and Ivy League compliance guidelines and recruiting regulations.
  • Understanding of team dynamics, sportsmanship, and athlete wellness.
  • Organizational skills to manage practice plans, training schedules, and game preparation.
  • Observation and evaluation skills to monitor athlete performance and identify development needs.
  • Basic recruiting support skills, including evaluating prospective student-athletes and providing recommendations.
  • Ability to support the Head Coach and First Assistant Coach in implementing training programs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within the coaching staff to support game strategy and player development.
  • Ability to maintain compliance with all University and NCAA/Ivy League policies.
  • Demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a second assistant, focusing on specific skill areas of player development and recruiting.
  • Work directly with athletes on skill-building.
  • Assist with administrative and logistical tasks such as travel to gain experience in program operations.
  • Instruct athletes effectively in practices, drills, and skill development.
  • Provide constructive feedback and guidance to athletes, enhancing individual and team performance.
  • Collaborate with coaching staff to support game strategy and player development.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and support the team in high-pressure or competitive situations.
  • Maintain compliance with all University and NCAA/Ivy League policies.
  • Perform duties in compliance with all NCAA, Ivy League rules and regulations.
  • Report any rules violations on behalf of themselves or any knowledge of violations within the division to the compliance office and appropriate parties.
  • Receive annual rules education on NCAA legislation related to recruiting.
  • Maintain current AED/CPR and First Aid certification.
