JOB SUMMARY Supports the Clerk of Scales in ensuring jockey weight compliance and equipment verification before and after races. Assists in maintaining accurate records and upholding racing regulations to protect the integrity of racing operations. This is a seasonal position for the summer race meet at Colonial Downs.

Requirements

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in recordkeeping.
  • Ability to follow direction and work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Effective verbal communication skills and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Basic understanding of Thoroughbred racing operations preferred.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Basic computer and data entry skills.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Virginia Racing Commission racing license.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in Thoroughbred racing or similar environment preferred.
  • Experience in clerical, recordkeeping, or compliance-related roles is a plus.
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in weighing jockeys and their equipment before and after each race to ensure compliance with assigned weights and applicable racing regulations.
  • Supports the verification of equipment, including saddles, pads, and personal gear, to ensure all items meet regulatory standards.
  • Helps maintain accurate and detailed records of weights, equipment checks, and any discrepancies.
  • Immediately reports any overweight, underweight, or equipment irregularities to the Clerk of Scales or Stewards.
  • Communicates professionally with jockeys, trainers, and racing officials regarding weigh-in procedures and requirements.
  • Assists in maintaining the security and organization of the scale room in accordance with racing commission rules.
  • Ensures all documentation is completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Provides support during racing operations, including preparation for race day activities and post-race follow-up.
  • Attends required briefings, race meetings, and regulatory inspections as directed.
  • Ensures compliance with all state racing commission rules, track policies, and operational procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
