About The Position

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is responsible for managing over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring public safety and mobility. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, perform engineering reviews, and quality assurance tasks. This role is within the Bridge Management Section of the Bureau of Bridge Maintenance, Inspections, and Operations, focusing on the safety, reliability, and long-term serviceability of NYC's bridge infrastructure. The selected candidate will support the Scoping Unit in identifying rehabilitation and replacement needs, assisting in the development of project scoping documents, cost estimates, capital planning materials, and budget reports. The position offers exposure to bridge asset management, project scoping, capital program development, budget coordination, and collaboration with other bridge units and capital delivery groups.

Requirements

• Serving permanently in the title of Assistant Civil Engineer, or be reachable on the upcoming open-competitive exam# 7006.
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Master's degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.

Nice To Haves

• Possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is highly desirable.
• Strong foundational grasp of structural engineering and basic civil infrastructure concepts.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to coordinate with multiple technical groups and follow up on required information.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, GIS, AutoCAD, and engineering databases is preferred.
• Good written and verbal communication skills for generating summaries and memos.
• Solid organizational habits.
• An ability to collaborate effectively across multiple technical teams.

Responsibilities

• Support the Scoping Unit in identifying bridge rehabilitation, replacement, and component rehab needs.
• Assist in the development of project scoping documents, cost estimates, capital planning materials, and related budget reports.
• Review bridge inspection reports, inventory data, condition ratings, maintenance records, and other available information to help determine project needs and priorities.
• Connect bridge inspection findings, load rating results, asset inventory, maintenance needs, and engineering evaluations with long-term capital planning.
