About The Position

The City of Tomball is accepting applications for an Assistant City Planner. This role will serve as a liaison with developers, builders, engineers, State and Federal agencies, and other government representatives. The Assistant City Planner will provide technical support to the Community Development Department, Planning and Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustments, City Council, and City Manager in their decision-making process. The Assistant City Planner will assist with the administration of planning and zoning, including zoning reviews, site plan reviews, preparation of staff reports, handling routine inquiries from the public, creation of GIS zoning maps, and management of zoning GIS layers.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures related to City and regional planning and zoning administration.
  • Ability to interpret ordinances accurately and effectively.
  • High level of computer skills, with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Minimum of 2 years previous relevant work experience is required.
  • Bachelor (Related Field)
  • Drivers License

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with GIS software is preferred.
  • AICP (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Conducts research on issues, policies, and concepts pertaining to planning, zoning, and community development.
  • Prepares written reports and recommendations in response to public requests for zoning applications and various ordinance changes.
  • Assists with long term Comprehensive planning, updating of City maps, land use and development regulations.
  • Prepares proposals in draft form for amendments to the zoning ordinance, subdivision ordinance, and other documents and ordinances governing local planning, zoning, and development.
  • Conducts research and analysis on issues related to economic, housing, labor force, transportation, infrastructure, land use, and community development trends as requested.
  • Preparation and presentation of technical reviews regarding development and land proposals, including site plans, subdivision plats, etc.
  • Responsible for drafting Planning and Zoning Commission and Board of Adjustments annual reports.
  • Meets with the general public to discuss planning, zoning, and development issues; assists the public to define concerns and presents public questions to management; follows up with public to apprise of city policy and decisions.
  • Prepares staff input for Planning and Zoning Commission and Board of Adjustment meetings; presents findings and answers questions regarding agenda items.
  • Participates in public meetings.
  • Manage Planning-specific GIS layers, creating, editing, and maintaining Planning GIS data.
  • Create, manage, and maintain Zoning GIS case maps.
  • Other duties as assigned.
