About The Position

The office of Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein is seeking qualified applicants for the position of full-time Assistant City Attorney in the General Counsel Section. This position will serve as in-house counsel to City clients in our General Counsel Section. Under general supervision, this position is responsible for providing legal work of a civil or criminal nature; performs related duties as required. The anticipated salary for this position is between $71,011 to $88,691 depending on experience. Unclassified Positions: A person who has been selected by an appointing authority in accordance with the Columbus City Charter, Section 148(1) is said to have received an unclassified appointment. Those individuals receiving unclassified appointments serve at the pleasure of their appointing authority and may be terminated from employment at any time. The General Counsel Section is responsible for advising the city and its departments and employees in all matters concerning the daily operations of city government.

Requirements

  • Must currently be admitted to the Ohio bar and in good standing.
  • Must have relevant experience as a licensed attorney advising clients, legal research and writing experience, statutory interpretation familiarity, and legal drafting experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of legal principles of civil law, constitutional law, the Ohio Revised Code, Columbus City Codes, and other applicable municipal, state, and federal laws as they relate to the operations of city government.
  • Knowledge of Constitutional law, Ohio Revised Code, Ohio Rules of Court, Ohio Rules of Evidence, and Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Knowledge of legal, court, and judicial procedures, rules, terminology, methods, documents, practices, and objectives.
  • Knowledge of applicable municipal, state, and federal laws, statutes, ordinances, and codes.
  • Knowledge of legal research tools and methods.
  • Knowledge of statutory interpretation methods.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and composition.
  • Ability to think creatively and come up with solutions to issues.
  • Ability to work effectively with persons from all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Prior litigation experience is preferred.
  • Experience with Ohio Sunshine laws (open meetings and public records) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Advises city departments regarding operations, duties, and compliance with applicable laws.
  • Reviews, edits, and drafts rules and legislation including administrative rules and City Code changes.
  • Conducts research and responds to legal inquiries from assigned departments.
  • Advises assigned departments regarding public records requests.
  • Reviews and advises assigned departments regarding contract matters.
  • Evaluates claims of or against the city for the purposes of recommending settlements.
