About The Position

The Assistant Chief Engineer plays a vital leadership role in maintaining optimal building operations and supporting the engineering team. This position oversees maintenance staff, coordinates preventative maintenance programs, and ensures building systems operate safely and efficiently with minimal disruption to occupants. As a key technical leader, you'll combine hands-on expertise with supervisory capabilities to maintain high-performance facilities while developing your team's skills and professionalism. This role directly supports JLL's commitment to delivering exceptional property management services and maintaining world-class facilities for our clients.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent with minimum two years of trades schooling in electrical system design, refrigeration, and HVAC systems.
  • Universal Technician Certification for CFCs (must be obtained within 90 days of employment if not currently certified).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in facility or plant engineering maintenance with at least 5 years in a supervisory capacity leading maintenance teams.
  • Journeyman-level engineering experience with demonstrated expertise in building automation systems (BAS) and fire/life safety systems operation and maintenance.
  • Proficiency with computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), email platforms, and computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Strong technical knowledge of HVAC systems, fluid handling/pumping equipment, mechanical systems, welding, and electrical systems engineering and operation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to interact effectively with all organizational levels, outside contractors, architects, and engineers.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with specific building automation platforms and energy management systems used in commercial real estate facilities.
  • Additional technical certifications in specialized areas such as electrical systems, plumbing, or HVAC beyond the required CFC certification.
  • Familiarity with OSHA safety standards and regulatory compliance requirements for commercial facilities.
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) for work order tracking and preventative maintenance scheduling.
  • Background in training program development and delivering technical training to maintenance personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct maintenance staff across your assigned shift, monitoring performance and ensuring service requests are completed efficiently with minimal disruption to building operations and proper clean-up protocols.
  • Monitor, adjust, and maintain critical building systems including HVAC equipment, refrigeration, chilled water systems, boilers, ventilating equipment, hot water heaters, pumps, valves, piping, and electrical systems while recording readings and taking corrective action to ensure optimal performance.
  • Coordinate and implement the preventative maintenance program by scheduling tasks to minimize service disruptions, delegating work to qualified staff members, and ensuring all maintenance activities meet established standards and timelines.
  • Diagnose malfunctioning equipment, analyze system operations to determine root causes of problems, and execute corrective actions including installation, repair, and rebuilding of mechanical and electrical components such as pumps, motors, compressors, and associated controls.
  • Manage inventory and procurement by ordering necessary parts and equipment, maintaining adequate supplies of tools and materials, preparing purchase order requests, and developing reliable vendor sources for stock materials.
  • Train and develop operations staff through hands-on instruction in equipment operation, safety procedures, troubleshooting techniques, and proper tool usage while recommending professional development opportunities and fostering workplace professionalism.
  • Provide on-call support and emergency response services, maintain safety compliance through proper hazardous material handling and storage, identify and remediate safety hazards, and ensure all infrastructure and compliance documentation meets federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
