About The Position

KATV, Channel 7 is seeking a hands-on Assistant Chief Engineer to help shape the future of their technical operations. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys problem-solving, learning new systems, mentoring others, and ensuring broadcast operations run smoothly. Requirements

  • Natural problem-solver with hands-on technical skills and collaborative abilities.
  • Experience in broadcast, IT, or RF systems, or strong technical skills and curiosity to grow in these areas.
  • Comfortable leading projects, mentoring others, and remaining calm under pressure.
  • Motivated by meaningful work that keeps the community informed and the station running smoothly.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Able to work on ladders when needed.
  • Hold a valid driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with FCC regulations.
  • SBE certifications.
  • Experience with transmitter maintenance.
  • Experience with satellite systems.
  • Experience with microwave links.
  • Knowledge of AVID, XPression, ClearCom, LiveU, or similar broadcast technologies.
  • Understanding of networking, IP routing, and basic cyber security principles.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Chief Engineer and team to maintain peak performance of KATV’s studio and transmitter.
  • Support daily newscasts, special events, and live productions, ensuring flawless broadcasts.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain systems including Ross automation, Wheatstone audio, RF and STL systems, IT infrastructure, and AWS cloud distribution.
  • Assist with Project Lightspeed, transmitter upgrades, and other major engineering initiatives.
  • Act as a technical leader, providing support and expertise to all station departments.
  • Maintain, document, and improve workflows for equipment, networking, and system reliability.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for critical news and weather events.
