We are looking for a motivated, experienced, hands-on Assistant Chief Engineer. This is a full-time position based in Bethesda, MD.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience in building maintenance, HVAC, boiler operations, or central plant operations preferred.
  • High-rise building experience preferred.
  • Basic understanding of boilers, chillers, HVAC systems, pumps and motors, and building automation systems.
  • Ability to read gauges, meters, and equipment diagrams.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools safely.
  • Strong troubleshooting and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical school or HVAC training preferred.
  • Maryland Stationary Engineer License
  • EPA Refrigerant Certification

  • OSHA safety training

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the operation and monitoring of steam boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps and motors, heat exchangers, condensate and feedwater systems, air compressors, and domestic hot water systems.
  • Monitor operating temperatures, pressures, flows, and water levels.
  • Record equipment readings and maintain accurate operational logs.
  • Assist in maintaining and troubleshooting air handling units (AHUs), fan coil units, exhaust systems, make-up air systems, pumps and hydronic systems, and pneumatic and DDC controls.
  • Support seasonal heating and cooling changeovers.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC equipment.
  • Lubricate motors and bearings.
  • Replace belts, filters, and other routine wear components.
  • Clean mechanical equipment and work areas.
  • Assist with chemical treatment programs and water testing.
  • Respond to equipment alarms, mechanical failures, water leaks, power outages, HVAC complaints, and fire alarm conditions.
  • Assist during building emergencies and severe weather events.
  • Monitor BAS/DDC systems and report abnormal conditions.
  • Assist with troubleshooting control system issues.
  • Follow all OSHA, NFPA, Montgomery County, and State of Maryland safety requirements.
  • Maintain safe working conditions in all mechanical and maintenance areas.
  • Properly use PPE and follow lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Assist maintenance staff with mechanical-related repairs.
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors as directed.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and inventory.
