About The Position

Assists in supervising and coordinating activities of workers engaged in the care and movement of livestock in a Feedlot. This role involves sharing responsibility for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of subordinate units, including Receivers, Doctors, Penriders, and Processors. The Assistant Manager also directly supervises non-supervisory employees and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws. Key functions include managing inventory, developing budgets, ensuring adherence to laws and company standards, and promoting safe work practices.

Requirements

Undergraduate degree; or equivalent related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Animal husbandry skills.
Knowledge of cattle breeds and characteristics.
Knowledge of Word Processing software, Spreadsheet software, and Database software.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Responsibilities

Assists in the management of 2-3 subordinate supervisors who supervise 15-20 non-supervisory employees.
Directly supervises 1-2 non-supervisory employees.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities including interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning work, appraising performance, rewarding/disciplining employees, and resolving problems.
Assigns workers to tasks such as receiving, weighing, inspecting, medically treating, and transferring livestock.
Examines livestock to determine the effectiveness of disease control and collaborates with veterinarians to take corrective action.
Observes livestock handling and issues instructions to minimize stress during transfer.
Ensures no animal leaves the facility without meeting applicable withdrawals by maintaining thorough and accurate records.
Manages department supplies inventory by researching costs, designing inventory systems, determining levels, and anticipating needs.
Develops department budget and manages expenses by studying historical data and anticipating needs.
Functions as Cattle Department Manager in his absence.
Sets a positive example for employees by modeling safe work practices and following safety rules.
Communicates critical safety information to employees by conducting regular safety training and monitoring for unsafe behavior.
Monitors department activities to assure adherence to applicable USDA, FDA, State, and Federal laws, Company policies, and Company standards.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops, reviewing publications, networking, and participating in professional societies.
