About The Position

The Assistant Camp Director supports the Camp Director in managing the day-to-day operations of camp and ensuring the successful delivery of program activities and events. This role provides leadership across all aspects of camp operations and steps in as Acting Camp Director when needed. The Assistant Camp Director is a highly adaptable position, taking on diverse projects and responsibilities to ensure a safe, fun, and mission-centered camp experience for all. From February through late May, the Assistant Camp Director plays a key role in preparing for the summer season by assisting in the planning and development of camp programming, supporting the design and facilitation of staff training, participating in the recruitment and hiring of seasonal staff, and collaborating with internal GSGLA departments to ensure smooth and compliant camp operations. During the summer season (late May through August), the Assistant Camp Director helps administer and coordinate camp operations, including program oversight, staff supervision, and parent communication. This includes monitoring staff behavior and performance, supporting transitions due to staff turnover, and stepping into various roles as needed to maintain consistent and high-quality camp experiences.

Requirements

  • Must be 25 years of age by the start of camp training.
  • Must be available for the duration of the overnight camp season including pre-camp trainings and post-camp clean up (May 2026 – August 2026).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid Certification throughout the position’s employment dates. Training will be available.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be willing and able to drive camp staff in a GSGLA van.
  • Must be willing to work weekends, early morning, and late-night hours as needed.
  • Must submit a basic health history form as set by the American Camping Association.
  • Ability to spend time sitting, utilizing the computer, and standing and walking throughout the facilities.
  • Ability to lift up to 45 pounds periodically.
  • Must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned
  • Must successfully complete a Live Scan and background check

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the planning and development of all camp programming.
  • Contributing to the design and facilitation of staff training.
  • Participating in the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of seasonal staff.
  • Collaborating with internal GSGLA departments to ensure operational readiness and compliance.
  • Under the direction of the Camp Director, assist in the administration and coordination of the camp operation by carrying out program coordination and staff supervision as delegated.
  • Serve as a liaison for parent communication by responding to inquiries, sharing updates, and addressing concerns to ensure transparency and trust.
  • Monitor staff behavior and performance to ensure alignment with camp values and expectations; support transitions due to staff turnover by facilitating onboarding and reassigning duties as needed.
  • Provide flexible support by stepping into program, logistics, or supervisory roles as needed to maintain smooth and consistent camp operations.
  • Work with camp leadership to co-coordinate field trip schedules, ensuring safe, well-organized, and engaging experiences for campers.
  • Plan and manage bus rosters for camper arrivals and departures, ensuring a smooth and organized process.
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures during camp programs.
  • Ensure that ACA standards, state codes, and guidelines from GSGLA are followed.
  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Provide guidelines for programs utilizing camp equipment.
  • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures in all program areas.
  • Act as a member of the camp administration team both within activities and throughout the camp day to plan, direct, and supervise all camp operations under the director of the Camp Director.
  • Address program concerns in a timely manner; effectively communicate changes and concerns with the Camp Director.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training.
  • Serve as a role model through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special programs, sleep outs, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  • Participate in senior staff meetings and lead daily staff meetings as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
