About The Position

The Department of Economic Security (DES) is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team as Assistant Bureau Chief within the Division of Benefits and Medical Eligibility (DBME). This position reports directly to the Bureau Chief and involves independent work on sensitive, high-level, and critical issues, providing recommendations based on findings. The role includes supervising 5 to 10 direct reports, providing written and verbal guidance to the Administration’s leadership, and having the authority to facilitate and attend internal and external meetings, speaking and acting on behalf of the Bureau Chief. Responsibilities also include overseeing middle to large-sized projects, researching and developing reports, conducting call center visits, developing and maintaining expertise in three programs, and working closely with Metro Program Managers to develop their roles. This position is available for full-time remote work within Arizona.

  • Driver’s License Requirements (if driving is an essential function)
  • Successfully pass background and reference check
  • Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify)
  • High School Diploma or GED

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree and one year of Family Assistance experience.
  • Or a combination of high school diploma/GED, skills and experience appropriate to the assignment as an Assistant Bureau Chief.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a confidential direct working relationship with the Bureau Chief, which includes having full decision-making authority and the ability to speak, take action and provide direction on behalf of him/her.
  • Supervising 5 to 10 direct reports.
  • Facilitate and/or represents the Bureau Chief at internal and external meetings and accurately report back the information received in the meeting.
  • Research develops and maintains various reports, conducts call center visits and assists with monitoring the programs’ timeliness, quality and interview durations for Administration.
  • Oversee various middle to large-sized program related projects, interview participants, gather information, monitor, track and meet assigned deadlines.
  • Consolidates researched information needed and uses a customer-centric approach to prepare verbal and written communication to internal and external customers.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in the Division of Benefits and Medical Eligibility’s three programs: Nutrition Assistance, Medical Assistance and Cash Assistance.
