About The Position

The Assistant Bridge Preservation Designer (CE II) will work in the bridge preservation unit as a technical reviewer and project designer. The Bridge Preservation Unit sits at Headquarters under the Bridge Section. This unit is responsible for delivery of the bridge preservation program, technical review of bridge preservation projects, and assisting the Districts as needed to advertise and prepare contracts. The unit develops standards and details related to bridge preservation. Additionally, the unit performs in-house designs for full projects and work orders as needed. Incumbents of this position with normal supervision from engineers of higher grade prepare structural design calculations for bridge repairs such as bridge deck replacements and beam end repairs for bridges of normal complexity, prepare bridge design plans and details, bridge repair quantities and special provisions, and review shop drawings and construction procedures. Incumbents also assist in the review and project management of bridge preservation projects.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering.
  • Knowledge of the terminology and standard abbreviations used in civil engineering.
  • Knowledge of the engineering properties of soils.
  • Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of concrete and asphalt; mechanical properties of fluids; theory and practice of plane surveying.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment and materials used in building, bridge, highway, road, street or tunnel construction.
  • Knowledge of the types & skill in the uses of equipment used in plane surveying; knowledge of the methods of soil testing.
  • Knowledge of mathematical formulae used to compute volumes and areas.
  • Knowledge of mathematical computations used in solving civil engineering problems.
  • Knowledge of elementary algebra, trigonometry, plane and solid geometry, integral and differential calculus; knowledge of the standard procedures for taking field notes in connection with plane surveying.
  • Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of civil engineering data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to understand, apply and explain the laws, rules, regulations, procedures, specifications and guidelines governing assigned unit activities and in connection with the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, buildings, etc.
  • At least three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials.
  • At least one year of the above experience must have been in a professional capacity.
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License may be required.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and understanding of bridge preservation project scoping and development.
  • Awareness of AASHTO Guide to Bridge Preservation Actions and FHWA Bridge Preservation Guide.
  • Experience designing and reviewing bridge preservation projects including in kind repairs and resurfacing.
  • Awareness of MassDOT CAD Standards and working knowledge of AutoCAD.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares structural design calculations for bridge elements and repairs for bridges of normal complexity in accordance with AASHTO specifications and MassDOT standards.
  • Prepares repair plans and details in accordance with MassDOT standards.
  • Prepares and/or checks bridge construction material quantity calculations and bridge project cost estimates.
  • Checks shop drawings and construction procedures and determines compliance with design intent for repairs and preservation actions designed by the Bridge Preservation Unit.
  • Reviews preservation projects of normal complexity for completeness, technical correctness, and coordination of specifications and estimates with work to be completed.
  • Assists in reviews of preservation projects of moderate complexity for completeness, technical correctness, and coordination of specifications and estimates with work to be completed.
  • Assists in the preparation of submissions of projects for advertisement and assists in project award.
