About The Position

This is a position-specific recruitment for the Comptroller of Maryland, located in Cumberland, MD. The role involves learning the duties of a branch office manager and assisting with the planning, organizing, directing, and supervising of branch office representatives. The position directs the work of reporting staff, handles taxpayer inquiries and complaints via various communication channels, reviews and approves leave, and monitors staff coverage. A key aspect is ensuring compliance with state tax laws, rules, regulations, and procedures. This role is considered essential personnel for emergency situations and requires full-time availability. The position is not eligible for teleworking and requires the operation of a motor vehicle, necessitating a valid Maryland driver's license. Employees must be able to handle interactions with upset taxpayers and may encounter physical demands such as lifting 25-35 pounds or climbing ladders. Employees are restricted from preparing tax returns outside of their job duties or working for private accounting companies.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Four years of professional work experience in auditing, accounting, tax law, general management or customer service.
  • Possession of a driver’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

Responsibilities

  • Learn the duties of the branch office manager.
  • Assist with the planning, organizing, directing, and supervising of branch office activities.
  • Direct the work of reporting staff, which may include professional, technical, or clerical workers.
  • Exercise independent judgment in answering inquiries and complaints from taxpayers, businesses, tax preparers, and the general public.
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints via phone, in person, virtually, and through correspondence via the on-line CRM application.
  • Review and approve leave requests.
  • Monitor staff coverage of the branch office.
  • Promulgate, promote, and ensure compliance with policies, rules, regulations, and procedures related to tax laws.
  • Ensure the branch office is adequately staffed during normal work hours and available during emergency situations.
