About The Position

The New York City Law Department is hiring an admitted attorney as Assistant Borough Chief in the Family Court Division’s Juvenile Justice practice in its Brooklyn Office. The practice handles cases involving youth under age 18 who are charged with acts that would be crimes if committed by adults. The Assistant Borough Chief reports directly to a Deputy Borough Chief and provides leadership in supervising legal and support staff, maintaining high-quality legal practice, and advancing the Division’s mission. The role includes supervising and training attorneys; providing legal, strategic, and procedural guidance to attorneys and support professionals; maintaining an active caseload; reviewing attorneys’ work; and conducting courtroom observations. The Assistant Borough Chief also assists Borough Chiefs with office initiatives and administrative duties and helps develop and implement borough- and division-wide policies, procedures, and protocols. The position involves building relationships with community stakeholders, maintaining a presence in community neighborhoods, and supporting work addressing juvenile delinquency and Interstate Child Support matters. The Assistant Borough Chief attends or presents external trainings, identifies emerging practice issues, and presents legal issues, practice updates, and changes in statutes and case law at staff meetings. The role also includes participating in staff performance assessments, representing the Division at interagency meetings, serving as a liaison to city and statewide partners—including NYPD, the Department of Probation, and ACS—and participating in a citywide rotation of night and weekend court assignments. Following orientation, attorneys may choose between limited, irregular work-from-home days or a Citywide Pilot Program that permits remote work on two set days per week, subject to Division approval and staffing needs. Participants must maintain one designated remote work location, and in-person obligations take precedence. The pilot is being tested across City agencies and is not yet permanent.
