About The Position

Whitman College, located in Walla Walla, is seeking an Assistant Baseball Coach to assist the Head Coach in administering all aspects of the Men’s Baseball Program. This position is 0.93 FTE, working 1,934 annual hours, and reports directly to the Head Baseball Coach. The role involves coaching, player development, recruitment, team operations, outreach, representation, compliance, and safety, all in alignment with the College’s values and NCAA Division III philosophy.   • Strong understanding and/or willingness to learn baseball-specific technologies.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Appreciation for the role of intercollegiate athletics in a highly selective academic environment and the desire to help student-athletes strive for balance and success in that rigorous setting.
  • Requires physical activity to execute necessary student-athlete instruction (i.e., standing, walking, and office work).
  • Ability to move objects or loads weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 2+ years of successful coaching experience at the collegiate, club, or high school level.
  • Ability to throw quality on-field batting practice on a regular basis.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet one of the following criteria: be at least 18 years old with 2 years of driving experience and complete a driver improvement course, OR be at least 19 with 3 years of experience and successfully pass a motor vehicle report (MVR) check.
  • OR a combination of relevant education, training, and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to throw competitive batting practice.
  • Experience with baseball technologies, specifically Trackman and Blast Motion.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Coach with practice planning, execution, and on-field instruction with individual players, position-specific groups, and full team settings.
  • Assist in developing and implementing game plans, reports, strategies and on-field duties as assigned.
  • Perform coaching duties during pre-game and in-game based on assigned responsibilities.
  • Serve as a mentor, teacher, leader, and role model to student-athletes.
  • Assist in all phases of the recruiting process, specifically the scouting and evaluation of skilled and academically qualified student-athletes.
  • Assist and lead all aspects of camps, clinics, tournaments, and other events that support the recruitment of potential student-athletes.
  • Support and lead coordination of team events on campus and while traveling.
  • Assist in monitoring academic progress and serve as a program liaison for campus colleagues.
  • Work within program financial parameters to coordinate logistics accordingly, including but not limited to transportation, travel accommodations, equipment, apparel, and more.
  • Support and lead coordination of alumni and community programming.
  • Represent the College and its athletics program with honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship at all times to various institutional programs and students, parents, the general public, alumni, and external agencies.
  • Develop positive, professional relationships with officials, league personnel, coaching colleagues, and administrative staff.
  • Comprehend, understand, and work within the parameters of Whitman College, the NWC and NCAA Division III philosophy and rules.
  • Is proactive pertaining to all aspects of safety, including injury prevention, risk management, and the proper use of facilities and equipment.
  • Maintains a safe and inclusive environment for student-athletes by identifying potential hazards, modeling best practices, and ensuring timely reporting of accidents or concerns.
  • Responsible for 40 hours of game management responsibilities as assigned by the Event Management Director.
  • Complete special projects and other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and the Director of Athletics.
