About The Position

The position is created for the prosecution of general traffic and criminal cases in the Atlanta Municipal Court. The assistant attorneys prosecute general traffic and criminal cases, and ordinance violations, high and aggravated traffic offenses such as DUI and Aggressive Driving, state misdemeanors such as possession of marijuana less than an ounce and underage persons in possession of alcohol, as well as some civil offenses such as False Alarm violations, on behalf of law enforcement, city agencies, and the general public. Attorneys also handle all direct appeals arising from the Atlanta Municipal Court to the Superior Courts of Fulton or DeKalb Counties, the Georgia Court of Appeals, and the Georgia Supreme Court. Attorneys work in teams supervised by a Solicitor, Senior Assistant, who consults and guides the Assistant Attorney in case development, trial and general management through to disposition.

  • Excellent research and writing skills required.
  • Ability to manage heavy case-loads in a demanding and challenging courtroom.
  • Ability to compile, organize, prepare and maintain an assortment of records, reports and information in an effective manner and according to departmental and/or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to utilize and understand computer applications and techniques as necessary in the completion of daily assignments.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
  • Capable of working under stress related to duties that require constant attention to detail, tight deadlines and prosecution in the courtroom.
  • Ability to dispense justice and maintain discretion and understanding.
  • Ability to follow directions and instructions of senior staff members to ensure the desired goals are met successfully.

Responsibilities

  • Prosecuting general traffic, criminal, DUI, and Quasi-Criminal cases.
  • Prosecuting other Code violations associated with Housing, Fire, Commercial Maintenance, Zoning, Sanitation, Drinking Water, Illegal Dumping, Business License, Erosion Control, and Judicial In rem on behalf of the City and the citizens of Atlanta.
  • Conducting preliminary hearings to determine probable cause.
  • Developing case management plans, to include screening, investigating and prosecuting assigned cases.
  • Collecting and analyzing evidence and reviewing pertinent case law, statutes and other legal documents.
  • Reporting to court, interacting with internal and external customers, always mindful to be courteous and respectful, and prosecuting cases on a daily basis, unless otherwise assigned.
  • Working with defense attorneys in advance of trial to conduct pre-trial conferences and negotiations.
  • Becoming proficient in the use of case management systems, and becoming familiar with the various offices and their functions within the courthouse.
  • Providing effective customer service, communication and interpersonal techniques regarding interaction with management, coworkers, relevant departments, court staff and the general public.
  • Operating computers and working with databases, spreadsheets, word processing, presentations, e-mails and other related software.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by Solicitor.
