Assistant Attorney General | Energy & Ratepayer Advocacy Division
About The Position
Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell is looking for a highly motivated and skilled attorney to join her team as an Assistant Attorney General in her Energy & Ratepayer Advocacy Division (ERA) of the Energy and Environment Bureau. ERA advocates on behalf of the customers of Massachusetts’ electric, gas, and water companies. ERA’s mission includes advocating for affordable rates and holding utility companies accountable; advocating for a smart, cost-effective, and equitable clean energy transition; advocating for environmental justice; and protecting consumers from predatory energy companies. ERA represents consumers in state and federal courts, as well as administrative regulatory bodies, such as the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). ERA also represents ratepayer interests in the New England Power Pool (NEPOOL) stakeholder process.
Requirements
- A member of the Massachusetts Bar
- At least two (2) years of civil or criminal litigation experience
- At least one (1) year of experience in connection with the regulation of gas, electric, and/or water companies
- At least one (1) year of regulatory or administrative law experience relevant to the ERA’s work
- Ability to litigate on both policy and technical issues, with emphasis on those involving economic, financial, and accounting issues
- Effective research, writing, editing, and oral communication skills required
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Demonstrated ability to connect to the people and communities served
- Demonstrated interest in supporting a respectful, diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment
Nice To Haves
- Additional years of experience in the above practice areas
- Experience in complex litigation
- Demonstrated ability to learn previously unfamiliar technical concepts and material quickly and successfully
Responsibilities
- Serving as lead or co-counsel in litigation before the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and federal and state courts
- Preparing briefs and other associated litigation and regulatory documents
- Conducting in-depth analysis and preparing legal memoranda regarding energy, water, or other regulatory-related topics
- Hiring and working with subject matter experts
- Interpreting laws and regulations
- Providing legal advice
- Strategizing and developing case-related action plans
- Investigating and prosecuting civil energy enforcement cases
