About The Position

The Arizona Attorney General’s Office State Government Division/Employment Law Section is seeking an Assistant Attorney General. The successful applicant will provide legal advice to ADOA Risk Management and state agencies, boards, and commissions regarding employment-law issues; represent state agencies in administrative hearings on employee disciplinary appeals and whistle-blower complaints; represent state agencies in state, federal, and appellate courts in employment-law matters; assist state agencies respond to charges filed by employees with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; and provide training to state agencies on employment law matters; supervise support staff; and travel within and out of Arizona. This position may offer the ability to work remotely two days a week, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and understanding of applicable statutes, case law and rules of State and Federal court.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Arizona Administrative Code.
  • Knowledge of administrative and judicial litigation.
  • Knowledge of financial considerations for the state.
  • Knowledge of the principles of employment law and public records of law.
  • Knowledge of ethical standards applicable to lawyers and public employees.
  • Skill in persuasive oral and written communication pertaining to case presentation through various stages of representation, including litigation through trial and appeal if required.
  • Skill in preparing legal documents memoranda and correspondence efficiently.
  • Skills include legal and factual issue analysis, legal research, legal writing, oral presentation, and negotiation.
  • Skill in working with clients to solve problems.
  • Skill in working with coworkers to solve problems.
  • Skill in prioritizing multiple demands.
  • Ability to identify issues, analyze and articulate legal arguments, assess evidence and communicate it to the client.

  • Juris Doctorate
  • Licensed to practice law in Arizona
  • A valid Arizona Driver’s License is required, along with consent to have your driving record run periodically.
  • Admission to, and good standing with, the Arizona State Bar is required (include on resume the date(s) of admission in Arizona and any other states).
  • Candidate must have an active Arizona State Bar license.
  • Attorney applicants are required to submit a writing sample with their resume/application profile.
  • All applicants under serious consideration for hire with the Attorney General's Office are required to be fingerprinted by the Office and complete a criminal background check through State and Federal agencies.
  • Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice to ADOA Risk Management and state agencies, boards, and commissions regarding employment-law issues.
  • Represent state agencies in administrative hearings on employee disciplinary appeals and whistle-blower complaints.
  • Represent state agencies in state, federal, and appellate courts in employment-law matters.
  • Assist state agencies respond to charges filed by employees with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
  • Provide training to state agencies on employment law matters.
  • Supervise support staff.
  • Travel within and out of Arizona.
  • Represent the State and state employees in administrative proceedings, such as before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and State and Federal court litigation referred pursuant to A.R.S. 41-621.
  • Review, evaluate, monitor and advise the Risk Management Division regarding statutory notices of claim and lawsuits regarding potential exposure; make recommendations regarding settlement.
  • Advise State human resources professionals and managers regarding pending personnel issues.
  • Research and draft legal documents, memoranda and appellate briefs, correspondence, and settlement agreements.
  • Prepare for and appear at hearings and depositions in Phoenix and other Arizona locations, including virtually.
  • Attend office and staff meetings, handle office administrative matters.
