The Bob Keppel Criminal Justice Division of the Washington State Attorney General’s Office is hiring an attorney for its Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) Team in Seattle. The role involves prosecuting civil commitment cases under RCW 71.09. SVP prosecutors work to protect community safety by identifying and interrupting the conduct of individuals who meet Washington law’s criteria for sexually violent predators. Cases are civil in nature, though some aspects of criminal law apply. The attorney will practice in Superior Court and occasionally handle appellate matters before the Washington State Court of Appeals, Washington State Supreme Court, and federal courts. The work is demanding and rewarding, and the attorney will join a collegial, inclusive team of attorneys, paralegals, and investigators. The position is based in the downtown Seattle office and supports a hybrid in-office and remote schedule; travel around the state for court hearings is sometimes required. Applicants must be graduates of an ABA-accredited law school or have completed the WSBA Rule 6 Law Clerk Program, and must be licensed to practice law in Washington State. Applicants actively pursuing admission who meet the other stated qualifications will also be considered. Selected applicants must pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check and submit to additional background checks every five years as a condition of employment.
