About The Position

The Oregon Department of Justice is hiring an Assistant Attorney General for its Child Advocacy and Protection Division (CAPD), based in Eugene, Oregon, with opportunities for a hybrid remote work schedule. The position is limited duration through December 31, 2027, with a possibility of extension based on agency needs. The role may be filled at either the Assistant Attorney General or Senior Assistant Attorney General level, with salary depending primarily on years of legal practice experience and other factors. CAPD attorneys provide comprehensive legal advice and litigation services to the Oregon Department of Human Services Child Welfare Program in all phases of juvenile dependency and termination of parental rights cases. Attorneys work closely with the agency on child safety and improving outcomes for children and families involved in child abuse and neglect cases. The work requires balancing legal advice with frequent court appearances, ranging from short hearings to complex multi-day trials, and managing multiple demands in a fast-paced environment. This litigation-focused role involves significant time in court, frequent travel to court and client offices, strong organization and attention to detail, and collaboration with agency-client representatives and internal support staff. Travel may include overnight stays. The successful candidate must pass a fingerprint-based Criminal Justice Information Systems background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. The employee must also be able to independently transport substantial hearing or trial materials to court and client offices. The Oregon Department of Justice represents the State of Oregon and state-elected and appointed officials, agencies, boards, and commissions in most civil and many criminal proceedings.
