About The Position

The Office of the Attorney General has an opening for an Assistant Attorney General within the Litigation Division in the Augusta Office. This position will defend the State and its agencies and employees from a variety of claims, including claims arising under the Maine Tort Claims Act, 42 U.S.C. § 1983, the Maine Human Rights Act, the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Administrative Procedure Act, and other state and federal laws. The position will handle matters at both the trial court and appellate levels in both state and federal court. The position will provide legal advice to the Risk Management Division and other state agencies. The position will consult with, and provide litigation support to, Assistant Attorneys General in other divisions within the Office of the Attorney General.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be members of the Maine Bar in good standing or eligible to become a member in a reasonable amount of time
  • Have an eye for legal detail
  • Be interested in complex state and federal litigation
  • Have strong legal advocacy and writing skills
  • Have a demonstrated ability to function effectively as part of a team

Nice To Haves

  • At least three years of legal practice with demonstrated proficiency in civil litigation is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Defend the State and its agencies and employees from a variety of claims, including claims arising under the Maine Tort Claims Act, 42 U.S.C. § 1983, the Maine Human Rights Act, the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Administrative Procedure Act, and other state and federal laws.
  • Handle matters at both the trial court and appellate levels in both state and federal court.
  • Provide legal advice to the Risk Management Division and other state agencies.
  • Consult with, and provide litigation support to, Assistant Attorneys General in other divisions within the Office of the Attorney General.
