About The Position

The Assistant Athletic Trainer (Chaperone, Track & Field/Cross Country and Golf) plays an essential role in supporting the health, safety, and performance of San Diego State University student-athletes. Under the general supervision of the Sr. Associate Athletic Director of Athletic Medicine, this position provides a full range of clinical athletic training services, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, emergency care, and medical coverage for assigned varsity sports. The incumbent works collaboratively with physicians, healthcare providers, coaches, and athletics staff to promote student-athlete well-being while ensuring high-quality medical care, regulatory compliance, and a positive student-athlete experience. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to a competitive NCAA Division I athletics program while making a meaningful impact on the success of student-athletes on and off the field.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.
  • Knowledge of medical supply procurement, including vendor selection, product quality, inventory management, and cost-effective purchasing practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with student-athletes, coaches, physicians, parents, and other healthcare professionals while serving as a liaison among stakeholders.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills appropriate for a healthcare setting.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, exercise sound judgment, and work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced athletic environment.
  • Proficiency with sports medicine and rehabilitation equipment and technologies (e.g., Biodex, SwimEx, Alter-G), as well as Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of advanced athletic training and rehabilitation techniques, including specialized therapeutic interventions, and experience with inventory, budget, insurance, and travel responsibilities in a sports medicine environment.
  • Certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification.
  • Must possess and maintain certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and first aid.
  • Must stay current with these certifications and submit proof to Senior Associate Athletic Director of Athletic Medicine.
  • Valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
  • Must currently be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience providing athletic training services in a collegiate, professional, or high-performance sports setting, with experience supporting soccer and/or tennis programs preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive athletic training services, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and ongoing care for assigned student-athletes.
  • Provide medical coverage for practices, competitions, conditioning sessions, and championship events while coordinating emergency medical care and referrals as needed.
  • Collaborate with physicians, healthcare providers, coaches, and athletics staff regarding injury status, treatment plans, rehabilitation progress, and return-to-participation recommendations.
  • Maintain medical records, clinic schedules, treatment documentation, and administrative processes in accordance with university, healthcare, and NCAA requirements.
  • Support the Athletic Medicine program by serving as a preceptor for athletic training students, promoting effective communication, and contributing to a professional and collaborative healthcare environment.
