The University of North Texas (UNT) is a Carnegie R1 research university with a population of over 45,000 students. The Denton, Texas community combines close proximity to one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country (Dallas-Fort Worth) with an intimate and culturally vibrant college town atmosphere. The UNT Chemistry Department consists of 31 faculty members, including 21 research-active faculty; over 100 graduate students; and approximately 200 undergraduate chemistry majors. The department is in a growth phase, having hired an endowed Welch Chair in Chemistry, two new Associate Professors, and six new Assistant Professors since 2020, and with plans to attain a core of 25 research-active faculty over the next few years. Our department has a strong culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, with specific strengths in materials chemistry, computational chemistry, and catalysis. New faculty members will have the opportunity to contribute to these areas, as well as helping to grow a new interdisciplinary emphasis in Chemical Biology within the Chemistry Department and in collaboration with the BioDiscovery Institute (BDI) and other units on campus. The UNT Chemistry Department invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of chemical oncology, to begin September 1, 2027. This position is part of a Biomedical Research Cluster Hire which aims to recruit five new faculty members with expertise in health- and cancer-related research—encompassing cancer biology, microbiome research, medical biophysics, and biomedical applications of AI—to the UNT College of Science in Fall 2027. The selected individual will interact with researchers in the Department of Chemistry and in other academic units, including the BioDiscovery Institute and the Biomedical Engineering Department, contributing to planned growth in interdisciplinary health-related research at UNT. Development of a nationally and internationally visible, externally funded research program is expected. The new faculty member will have access to substantial research support infrastructure in the Chemistry Department, including staffed NMR, X-ray diffraction, and high-performance computing facilities; a stockroom; and a shared instrumentation laboratory that houses a suite of equipment for chromatographic, spectroscopic, mass spectrometric, gravimetric, and microscopic analysis of samples. Contributions to undergraduate and graduate teaching (typically, one course per long semester) and departmental and university service are expected.
