About The Position

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Michigan State University (MSU), in collaboration with the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), is seeking applications for a tenure-system faculty position. This role focuses on Space Electronics, with a particular emphasis on the design, performance, and testing of artificial intelligence (AI) hardware systems. The position is open for appointment at the Assistant Professor rank, with consideration for exceptional candidates at the Associate or Full Professor ranks. The ideal candidate will have research that impacts space electronics and aligns with the MSU Space Electronics Initiative, leveraging on-campus high-energy ion test facilities at FRIB. A PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field is required by the appointment date, with an anticipated start of August 16, 2027. Successful candidates are expected to establish a funded, internationally recognized research program, contribute scholarly work, excel in teaching and student mentorship, and engage in service activities, all while upholding the university's land-grant mission. Candidates are encouraged to highlight how their research complements MSU's existing strengths. Key research areas include specialized environmental and test demands for AI systems in space (processing, memory, power, communications), space readiness for AI hardware challenges, integration and packaging of semiconductor systems for space environments, radiation and temperature effects on next-generation AI applications, and advanced testing protocols for AI hardware through instrumentation, analysis, and software. Additional qualifications include strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, with an ability to collaborate effectively in a research setting. Joint appointments with other departments are possible. Successful candidates will hold an academic-year position in the tenure system and are expected to enhance MSU's reputation through their professional activities. This is a union position represented by the Union of Tenure System Faculty (UTSF).
