About The Position

A permanent full-time faculty position as a Clinician Scientist is available in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Paediatrics, at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). The new faculty member will also be appointed in the Research Institute at The Hospital for Sick Children. The successful candidate must be eligible for a full-time faculty appointment at the rank of assistant, associate or full professor. SickKids is a world-renowned academic health science centre dedicated to the care of children, affiliated with the University of Toronto. The SickKids Research Institute includes seven fully integrated research programs and is in the state-of-the-art Peter Gilgan Centre for Research & Learning, within the Toronto Discovery District. The position offers a unique environment for medical science discoveries near nine teaching and research hospitals and Canada’s largest university. The Division of Nephrology comprises fifteen highly collegial full-and part-time faculty committed to world-leading clinical care spanning the entire field of Pediatric Nephrology, including high volume dialysis/apheresis and transplant programs and high-impact clinical and basic research focused on childhood and rare kidney diseases, aligning with SickKids' “Precision Child Health” initiative.

Requirements

  • Eligible for a full-time faculty appointment at the rank of assistant, associate or full professor.
  • Strong background in basic science, preferably with expertise in areas such as multi-omics, gene editing, disease modelling, or drug discovery.
  • Substantial research experience, typically demonstrated through a PhD and/or postdoctoral training.
  • Strong publication record.
  • Successful grant funding.
  • Conference presentations.
  • Ability to function proficiently in English.
  • Hold an MD, MBBS or equivalent degree.
  • Certified (or eligible for certification) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or have comparable qualifications.
  • Hold (or be eligible for) licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in areas such as multi-omics, gene editing, disease modelling, or drug discovery.
  • Focus on rare kidney diseases.
  • Comprehensive clinical expertise in Pediatric Nephrology, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), renal replacement therapy, and kidney transplantation.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching and mentoring students across the division, department, and university.
  • Supervising graduate students directly (if a cross-appointment with a University of Toronto graduate program is obtained).
  • Strong collaboration with colleagues across the division, department, research institute, university, external partners, and the broader community.
  • Contributing to both research and clinical care (20-30% of responsibilities dedicated to patient care).
  • Applying for a scientist-track role at the SickKids Research Institute and building an impactful research career.
