About The Position

Under the direction of the Head Coach-Artistic Swimming Competitive Aquatics, the Assistant Swim Coach will facilitate, develop, promote and reinforce technique and strength development standards with designated coaching groups. This role involves developing athletes in all aspects of swimming, including mental, psychological, and physical development. The Assistant Coach prepares and implements specialized skill workouts, assists in coaching assigned groups, and demonstrates the ability to work with all ages. They provide positive, encouraging, and specific feedback on stroke technique, and organize and direct swimmers at Level Testing, Clinics, and Local and Zone competitions. The position also includes providing pre- and post-routine feedback, assisting the Head Coach in season preparation, and communicating positively with parents. Maintaining effective relationships with members, participants, and staff, attending required meetings, and keeping records current are also key responsibilities. The role supports association initiatives, partners with other departments, and builds relationships within the YMCA movement, embodying YMCA values.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a coaching role.
  • Possess USAA Level I certification or obtain within 2 months of hire.
  • Possess specialized/recognized certification or education that relates to the development of youth on an Artitisc Swim Team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that facilitate positive interactions between youth, parents and coworkers; the ability to deal cordially with a wide variety of personalities both on the phone, email and in person.
  • Demonstrated commitment to mission and purpose of the YMCA.
  • Possess at hire and maintain CPR, AED and First Aid certifications.
  • Ability to withstand being in the water for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
  • All employees are expected to maintain boundaries, follow mandated reporting requirements, and uphold our policies and procedures to protect youth and participants.
  • This includes attending required trainings.
  • reporting suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and adhering to procedures that minimize risk.

Responsibilities

  • Develops athletes in all aspects of swimming including mental, psychological, and physical development.

  • Assists in coaching assigned groups and demonstrates the ability to work with all ages.
  • Provides positive, encouraging, and specific feedback to athletes on a daily basis with regard to stroke technique.
  • Organizes and directs swimmers at Level Testing, Clinics, and Local and Zone competitions.
  • Provides pre- and post-routine feedback to the swimmers at all competitions and level testings.
  • Assists Head Coach in preparation of new season by giving feedback on practices, meets and programs.
  • Communicates with parents in a positive & supportive manner.
  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
  • Attends required meetings, clinics or team social functions.
  • Keeps accurate attendance and all other records current and organized.
  • Supports and participates in association Initiatives according to association criteria.
  • Partners with other departments or outside agencies as appropriate to ensure success.
  • Builds relationships with members; encourages members to build relationships with other members and join in the YMCA movement.
  • Facilitates and guides the teaching of the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in our YMCA programs.
  • Maintains discipline with children during all activities under the guidelines of the Child Abuse Prevention Policy and Code of Conduct.
  • Keeps Head Coach appraised of situations requiring his/her attention.
  • Performs other job-related duties as requested and necessary.
  • Work with the Development Team, HR and key philanthropy volunteers to increase your understanding and skill set.
  • Build strategic relationships with members for year round member cultivation to increase the number of member campaign volunteers and donors.
  • Assist in achieving your department annual support campaign goal by directly and personally participating in campaign efforts and ongoing fundraising by identifying new volunteers and potential new donors.
